GF isn't supposed to protect your files.
It's simply a simple alternative to VFs, but applies EVERYWHERE. And slightly harder to carelesslly turn off.

Thanks Sammay,
I remember Don saying the same. But assumed there had to be good reasons for eil not using other methods other than GF - so I seemed to be missing something essential here.

I just fail to see the advantage of all these new filters that threaten to clutter up my toolbar. Adds additional complexity to something that is already hard enough to grasp, with Tab memory overriding FVS etc.

Now the VF syntax has become even harder with a Plus-sign - also present in RegEx and literal patterns - putting yet another GVF on top .... too much escalating featurities for my taste, micro-managing filters down to the last bit. Guess I just let it all rest, hoping I won't be affected by the changes.

Or lead up to them. A few months down the road, I might not recall all those settings - GF, GFV, admin.ini, regular config-settings. Rather than checking up all those possible places for entries that may apply or not apply, I feel safer seeing all files, then narrowing them down with existing methods.

to toggle the hidden attribute On/Off - not to mention other methods - yep, that makes more sense. BUT I fail to see why you would use GF for that?
How is Ghost Filter supposed to protect your files - it keeps baffling me.
used to use attr, but it's much more troublesome. i didn't say it protects, it just hides from obvious view and does it easily.
and yeah, most of i like GF over VF that it doesn't show info -i really couldn't use VF for "hiding" exactly because of that.

I hid .lnk shortcuts immediately after reading the beta notes and discovering the new GF feature. Awesome.

The ghost icon is very cool also. :D
I want XY to serve soft ice cream. Please Don, make XY serve soft ice cream.

I'm aware that the new +-operator can possibly break old code. I will make it optional. This and GVF will only surface in 15.70. It was just an experiment. 15.60 will have the ghost.

Relieved to hear this. Nothing against new features as long as they don't get in the way of existing ones.

Since we're already talking about 15.70 - as the year draws on I am getting more and more worried about the bread & butter stuff - where XY has been lagging behind. One such request - reliable Office+PDF previewing - has been around for many months, even years. I had really looked forward to 15.20

Then got my hopes up high again for 15.50:

Now all these due dates have sailed past, and if I read you correctly there isn't much hope for 15.70 either?

It continues to be one major reason for using other managers, not just for me, but others as well:

Yes, yes, I'm fully aware of it (and it will come). But you know, I'm a hedonistic coder, I follow the fun...

 If there is one thing I fully understand, it's the fun part. Also happens to be the reason I've been waiting for this thing so desperately.

Wouldn't want your work turn into a tedious chore, though. That never pays off, it's always to the detriment of all parties involved. Guess we both just have to wait for whenever the time seems right, to eventually merge your fun mood with my fun hopes.

Hi Don,

Is there any plan to add support for ghost filtering based on attributes? It would allow me to do something I previously requested:
- Show files with System attribute
- Show files with Hidden attribute
- Hide files with both System and Hidden attributes (this emulates the "Hide protected operating system files" option in WE

On a side note, I was able to crash XY by adding
attr:system
to the ghost filter list with Run-time error '10': This array is fixed or temporarily locked

Disable both:
- Configuration > Tree and List > Items in Tree and List > Show hidden files and folders
- Configuration > Tree and List > Items in Tree and List > Show system files and folders

From what I gather, Ghost is an exclusion filter only, you cannot use it to filter items IN like with VF, it's only there to filter OUT. Well, maybe you could, by filtering out everything BUT hidden or system.

I don't think you understood my intent. I want to see files that have the system -OR- hidden (but not both) attribute set, but hide files with both the system -AND- hidden attribute set. This is what the "Hide protected operating system files" option in WE does.

If Ghost filters supported attributes I could just leave on Show Hidden Files, Show System Files and add a Ghost filter to hide (attrib:system && attrib:hidden) - not the proper syntax, I know ;)

1) Currently no such plan; maybe in GF 2.0.
PS: In the next version you could use VF/GVF for this. I added the selector attrlist:

Code: Select all

!attrlist:hs
2) Does not crash here. Can you post that complete list?

Sure, my list is fairly basic right now:

f: "desktop.ini"
d: "System Volume Information"
d: "$RECYCLE.BIN"

Crashes when I add:

attr:system

and click OK.

If you set Visual Filters to be retained across folders, then you can use

Code: Select all

!attr:H AND attr:S
Don, what's the difference between attr: and attrlist:?
