Preview of LNK files: Shows linked file somewhat properly?

Post by j_c_hallgren »

So I was looking at some shortcut files (.LNK) via Preview and Raw View.

When in Raw View, I see the actual shortcut internal data, and stats at right show this sample as "Binary file: 620 bytes" and "Hex view: 39 lines"...ok, fine so far...but...

When I switch to Preview, now I see the target/linked file contents! Why?? :?

But assuming that was intended, and not saying it's wrong, just surprising, the stats at right show the Binary file size as still 620 bytes, and the Hex view now shows 48,896 lines! Both of these stats can't be true at same time!
If we're going to show the target/linked data, then we need to show the Binary file size of THAT file and not the LNK file, right?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Oh yes, well spotted! :) I fixed it.

Still needed is a display somewhere of the filename that is currently viewed (LNK or target). No space... unless I exploit the statusbar for this.

Also a go-to-target command on LNK files ctx menu would be nice, or?

PS: yes, it is a feature that the target is preview and the LNK is raw-viewed.

Could the blank area above "Binary file: xxx bytes" and left of the orange drop-down thingy say either "Shortcut" or "Target" when on a LNK file as appropriate, and in bold maybe also to draw attention and thus highlight it?
That might suffice and thus the true file name being viewed wouldn't need to be displayed.

Yes, a go-to could possibly be helpful, but I don't see it as a pressing need right now...unless someone else thinks differently?

Yes, but this area is reserved for some other ideas... I'd rather keep it.

Ok...so how about prefixing a size line, such as "LNK Binary file: xxx bytes" or "TGT Binary file: xxx bytes" maybe?
Or use that three char code as suffix to that line, or something like that?

Not enough space when file size is large.

But I found a way with marked color blue and a tooltip. :)

:D A very good solution to the issue as usual! The color helps remind user that file is not the LNK but is the target instead. Thanks!

Little bug there: have in a folder a file (toto.jpg) & a shortcut to that file (toto.jpg.lnk). Preview the LNK file, the picture is shown. Normal. Now move to the actual picture, yes the picture is still shown BUT the Marked Text 1 color is still used, with a tooltip speaking of a LNK target....

hmm.. it's still there ;) I think you fixed it for the previewing part, but it's still there when - on preview tab - the target is being shown through raw view mode.

Indeed.

And somehow it got totally wrong on another end, too. If I recall correctly (sorry, but my mind is 100% into CKS right now...) then Raw View should never show the LNK's target but always the LNK file itself. Well, this is not the case right now. Just fixed that.

Indeed. Allthough I never had the raw view to show the target, don't know how you did that ;)

Just to be clear, on Raw View Tab, it's always the LNK. But on Raw View Mode, while on Preview Tab, so for unknown file type/ext, then we do raw view the target (since we're on Preview tab)

Exactly.

PS: yep, it did not show the target in Raw view, but it said that it did
