How to disable Manual Sorting

Post by _ric_ »

Love the software! Been using it for a while, but this irritation has crept in for me recently.

Is there a way to permanently disable Manual sorting? I'd delete the option if I could, as I never use it...

Every now and again I wish to drag and drop items but it sorts them instead. So I have to goto Tools > Customize List > Untick Manual Sorting
Not sure why I have to repeat this so often.
Any way to permanently disable or at least set it as Off by default?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome,

Are you using Folder View Settings? Maybe you inadvertedly stored Manual Sorting in such a setting. From there it can creep into other folders after a certain sequence of actions.

Apart from that: If you tick Configuration | Styles | Apply list styles globally and then disable Manual Sorting it should be applied to all current tabs.

I don't see "Manual sorting" option in Configuration | Styles | Apply list styles globally to dialog box. I see only "Sort Order", but i want to remember the sort order, so i want that one enabled.

Yes I'm using Folder View. I will resave it without manual sorting and apply as default.
Will give that a go and see if it works...

Thanks

Manual Sorting is part of the list styles shown in menu Tools | Customize List.
Configuration | Styles | Apply list styles globally controls all styles in this list.

Excuse me for jumping in with a question I've been wanting to ask all along:
Why does it have to be either-or?
At what point would Drag&Drop and ManualSorting get in each others way if both were allowed? I fail to see an overlap. Moving files involves another location, whereas sorting them remains in the same folder. Why can't I drag anymore to another application outside of XY, or into the other pane?

You can drop items onto a folder in the same list.

Yes, but why not outside or into the other pane?

Technical reasons: I have to decide quite early, before the drag starts, what kind of drag it is. Cannot be changed later.

Thanks. No big deal, I've assigned a shortcut to the toggle.
It were nice, however, if we could sort (not move) by dragging a file across panes. Same location, just with a scroll-position way further down, or way further up. It's a long way to the top ...

That could be done, but low prio.

:) Great. Sorting is likely to happen in large folders, where you don't see the whole content at one glance. The improvement will make it easier to drag to the destination without losing track of the current position. Looking forward to it. Thanks.
