Well, this is at least funny if not ironic:

Today I also observed a diffuse "XY is lagging" scenario. It wasn't persistant but rather a sort of hickups kicking in every once in a short while. Because of this thread I decided to look at it in more detail (it isn't a scientific analysis, though!).

The OS load context was interesting because a long-lasting archive validation job (Acronis True Image) was running in the background. The validated archive file is located on my last classical hard drive (my remaining drives are 3 SSDs). As roughly observed using the Win 8.1 'Ressource Monitor' the average I/O-load on that drive was in the 60-80% range, sometimes going up to 100%.

The XY setup includes several (sticky) tabs some of which are pointing to folders located on that classical HD. Since I have assigned keys <1> and <2> to Cycle Tabs Backward/Forward I can quickly jump through my tabs. Each time I hit the "HD" tab there was a clear lag before the list was updated (* the lag is amplified by the Show Folder Sizes option checked). This behaviour stayed until the validation job was finished.

Given the I/O-load observed I do think, that XY isn't to blame for the hickups.

I have 2-5 seconds of complete frozen-ness when doing pretty much anything in an SFTP drive (via SFTP Net Drive). I know some delay is the nature of this beast, but what's particularly annoying is there's absolutely no feedback or action until the delay is complete. No indication, for instance, that I'm even *attempting* to drag an item until the delay ends, and I have to hold the button down for 2-5 seconds or the action is lost.

Can't think of much else anywhere in XY to complain about though.

Another kind of nonresponding is when the first click on the window's X doesn't work. Seen that hundreds, if not thousands of times. Just did a clean install of Win 8.1 and will see if it continues or picks up again.

I also have to remember the antivirus factor... A rogue antivirus can slow down all types of things.

It's worth noting that I also use xplorer2, and x2 often has similar slowdowns. It's interesting, because I'll go a period of a few months and either XY or x2 will give me problems, so I'll switch to the other. Right now I'm mostly using x2. So I don't think it's as easy as just saying, "This is an XY bug, so fix it Don." I suspect that there are many factors and that this problem is a "moving target" so to speak. It's also an interesting note though, that my third file explorer is TotalCommander. TC is very "oldish" and doesn't have a lot of the features that I like in x2 and especially in XY. However, over the years there have been lots of times that I'll go to open XY and it won't launch, so I try to open x2 and it won't launcher either, so then I launch TC. It has never failed to launch correctly. I'll be in the middle of my file management business, then up comes XY and x2...

It' s easy to add some debug code that will, after some ping pong, point to the line where it hangs. But:
1) That does not mean that it's easy to fix.
2) 1) does not mean that it's impossible to fix.
3) I got other things to do ATM.

Do you think that poor description can be awarded with a helpful answer?

You know "things" like

- what do you do (exactly)?
- when
- ...
you never did give anyswer to those questions...
Do you honestly never encountered "Not Responding" on XYplorer?

I get it once in a while when I move a bunch of mainly small files via the "Move Up" command (from a deeper nested directory structure to a higher one).

E.g. yesterday:
https://github.com/atom/atom/releases

Grabbed the atom-windows.zip file.

Extracted it and moved it up one level (the extracted files, not the .zip).

About 200 MB overall, 7950 files, 2560 folders.

Custom copy is on, the files are on a fast (500MB / sec) SSD.

My personal reply: no - I didn't.

Just minutes ago I got it - on testing the new functions connecting to USB devices.
So it makes sense to think about what you have done. Else you shouldn't expect it to get better.

I have another form of hanging, it's when closing the settings-window or closing XYplorer. My whole system hangs/lags (not freezing, it's more like if you are sledding and suddenly there's sand instead of snow) everytime I do one of those two things (around 5 seconds). I thought it had to do with all the settings having to save but I disabled saving and it still does it. Strange thing is the closing of the program affects mainly the browser (Firefox) and flash-videos, while closing the settings affects the whole pc. My system is new and high-end and I only have an SSD, so it can't be that.

Some earlier threads on this:

http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 07#p116207

http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 55#p114955

--> I attribute it to XY somehow not knowing when to stop on a refresh. That is, if big trees are available it will search through them even though they have nothing to do with the present action. As mentioned in one of the above threads:
I have all the standard fixes applied, specifically: "No network browsing on startup" enabled; "cache network servers" enabled; "auto-refresh | network locations" disabled; "use generic icons | all controls" enabled; "assume that servers are available" enabled; tweak("genericiconsfornetworklocations") = 1. And anything else I've seen mentioned.

Windows Explorer simply does not have this problem. It can occasionally hang but so rarely that it's a surprise. XY hangs so often (in the above circumstances) that it's a surprise when it doesn't.

I have the same problem with persistent 'not responding' issues. To the best of my knowledge, it happens most when I am renaming a folder or moving a folder. Moving files doesn't seem to impact, at least not for a noticeable length of time. It always seems to be folder operations. It doesn't seem to be dependent on the size of the folder or the number of files in it. I created a new folder and renamed it, and XYplorer went not responding.

Moving large folders is also one of my usual suspects - unless I disable background processing.

My other hangups concern network browsing and FindFiles. I've learned to always run a second instance before starting a search, not before saving my tabsets with SessionManager of course (great script), to avoid having to start over with browsing to all my tab locations.

The searching instance, however, still refuses to respond when I want to cancel the search. I always have to shoot it down, an awkward situation when you're at the machine of a customer who looks over your shoulder and worries about his files and open programs.

Is your tree extremely large?
Are you using Mini Tree (or not, ie Maxi Tree)?

How do you cancel searches? I do this often and never have any problems. Cancel is always immediate. I use ESC.

Hmm, glad you point this out. So ESC should do the job? Maybe I have to hold it down? Like with rename dialogs that get stuck on existing names.

To be honest, I don't have many case scenarios because I had abandoned XY search for quite a while. But recently I took it up again after starting to use labels. Maybe it gets stuck when searching for labels? Or it gets stuck while inside a really larger folder, and it was just bad timing trying to cancel at that very moment? Will keep an eye on it and let you know.
