Precedence of View Settings

Post by Stef123 »

I just can't figure out how the various view settings interact, what takes precedence over what?

Here's what I want:
1) Always show path column in Paper Folder
2) Always show path column in Search results and Branch View
3) Never show path column anywhere else
4) Remember widths and order of columns for all folders by default
5) Remember FVS for some folders
6) Auto-size columns by default, but from what I read this is not possible

Basically, I understand how to set up the above - what I need is an explanation of when and how some settings override others:
A) Tab settings have priority AFAIK - so I disabled Styles > Remember list settings per Tab
B) FVS enabled - make default. To cover 4) I enable the checkbox "Column Layout"
C) Styles > Apply list styles globally - what exactly is a "list style"? Everything that sits on that config-page? Does it contain all 4 categories under "Apply To..."? Does this button also cover C) or is it for A) only?

Apart from 5) (Remember FVS for some folders) obviously, these are the factory default settings in XY. And setting some FVS will not affect any of them. So, IMO, it should work out of the box. :?

BTW, I'm thinking about removing the "Default FVS" from the app. This thing is largely superfluous and leads to support questions again and again...

Code: Select all

paper:*
to have all PFs show the path column
Instead of enabling "Always Show Path Columns"? Or in addition to it?
This will always enable path column in PF tabs regardless of the state of "Always show path columns"

Thanks, Don and Sammay. I wish you had given me that hint earlier, before I began to question my mental sanity...

Why not? If it is superfluous and interferes with other settings?

I still don't get a grasp on my setup. Paper folder paths show up consistently ONLY with FVS disabled. As soon as I bring FVS into the game, it's back to a gamble. 'paper:*' -FVS improves the chances of getting paths, but there is a still a "random" streak to it. Maybe I must enable paths manually instead of setting it by PF-options?

Would you please elaborate a bit on my point C) above? Or point me to a help resource that explains the order of precedence, the interactions between global styles and styles per tab and how it fits into the scheme of FVS and PF path options?

"List Style" is all the toggles under Tools / Customize List. In "pane.ini" this is a combined (bit field) value saved per list mode under key "Style".

For what do you need it them? Note that XY has an internal auto-default that should take care. Note that I personally never ever used a "Default FVS" in XY.

Default FVS: Well, I use it for what the name suggests, I've setup a default style for newly opened folders/tabs. How do I do it if default FVS is removed? How do I change that internal default style?

OK, if you want new tabs in a specific style then you need it.

The internal default just remembers the last non-FVS style and restores it when you switch from a FVS to a non-FVS folder.

Well, yes, but to bug-track my problems I need to know how it interferes with the other stuff - FVS etc.
I obviously can enable list styles 1) globally 2) per tab 3) FVS - all at the same time

Concerning these overlaps - is there any documentation I can read instead of pestering you with a battery of questions?

I believe the order is : FVS -> tab -> tabset -> global
Stef123 wrote:C) Styles > Apply list styles globally - what exactly is a "list style"?
List Styles are the options in Tools->Customize List.

I don''t know the complete order but Tabs > FVS (though I would have wanted higher precedence for FVS)
