Laycat: simple picker for layouts and catalogs
Laycat: simple picker for layouts and catalogs
Hi,
after Don has introduced native support for layouts and Tree/Catalog to the right, everything is so much easier now. So, it's time to say good-bye to my layout manager script, its lifecycle ends here.
So here is Laycat, a simple combined picker for XY layouts and catalogs. It justs looks for saved layouts and/or catalogs and offers them in a plain menu. Icons are configurable. That's it.
Update 2014-06-21 (V1.1):
- added support for Column layouts
- minor improvements Edit: a little shot I hope I have factored in all standard constitutions.
Cheers,
Filehero

Thanks Filehero, I'm not planning on retiring your Layout Manager or Session Manager just yet though. One is a right click of a CTB and the other the left.

Hi Ken,
thanks for your kind words.
Indeed, I too still have it around on the right click slot of one CTB. I just think, the only "unique" function left (indicating a current layout) is not really worth the effort (and cpu time) to "migrate" it over.

Just a quick word to say:
Cool one!
Well, a few more XY releases and we'll be able to retire…
(Just kidding! We're only there because Don is so far ahead anyway…)
Have a nice day,
Flux

Hi Flux,
You? Don't think so.
Just kidding. Will you do an update to SessionManager for the layout stuff (I'm pretty sure you are thinking about it. )?
OMG, it's so freakin' hot over here.....

Re: Laycat: simple picker for layouts and catalogs
To put Laycat on steroids how about incorporating "Load Columns"?
Rationale: As long as the car is in the shop might as well take care of everything.

Hi Ken,
thanks a lot for testing and feedback.
Sure, we're all ready over here. Following the pattern seen so far, this will become a thriller match.
Time is nearly perfect: 6 pm.

Re: Laycat: simple picker for layouts and catalogs
Hi Filehero, I toyed with your very nice script for layouts and catalogs. I thought it would be nice to include a Toolbar loader as well as menu items for saving all those attributes. I'm surprised that Don hasn't included a built-in method to quickly load and save toolbars. It's so seamless and fast that I think if it was included, more people would certainly use it. It's easy to build 2 or 3 custom toolbars since all your customized toolbar buttons do appear on the left side column in the Customize Toolbar dialog. You could have different toolbars for different operations you'll be performing. Especially now with the same capability for Catalogs, Layouts and Column layouts.
Stefan submitted one very nice script for managing toolbars here ToolbarManager. It works great, but it's saving all the toolbars in one file so for that reason tends to be a much more complicated script than it probably needs to be. But, Stefan also provided a more quick and dirty method in his very helpful How to use and execute a script ? This is the one I built upon. I figured for simplicity why not have each toolbar in it's own text file especially now, since that's how Don saves and loads layouts and columns. The toolbars txt files would be in their own folder off <xydata> just as the columns and layout folder are.
Anyway here's a shot of the end result. I won't post the script without your permission since the majority is your work.
Thanks Filehero and Sammy for your help.

Hi Ken,
I haven't got around yet to play with indicidual and context-specific toolbars. Your shot looks nice.
For the sake of the XY community I'd like to ask you to post your script asap.
Cheers,
Filehero

Re: Laycat: simple picker for layouts and catalogs
Thanks Filehero, I want to provide a little more error checking before posting. It works fine for me but I need to get a toolbar folder created if it doesn't exist off of <xydata> and possibly add Don's "default" toobar in it as well as a starting point for new users and so something shows up on the toolbar section of the menu. From that point, users can save their current toolbar and starting playing to make up new ones. Other than that, it's working fine including a flag for the currently used toolbar.
