I experienced a dramatic slowdown in the display of thumbnails for which a cache was already established (6 or 7 seconds of disk activity, but not a remake of thumbnails). I figured I'd pass it on because it was driving me nuts for few days until I figured out why especially since it only affected one photo folder of photos and not other folders just as big or bigger. At some point a couple of weeks back, I had set up CCs for the folder with columns for aspect ratio, dimension, and "click" viewing of a few seconds using "makecoffee" or "ImageEye" such that one pane had the CCs and the other pane (same folder) had large thumbnails.
As it turned, even though I had stopped using the dual pane configuration above and I was strictly viewing the photos in large thumbnail mode, I believe XYplorer was still performing the same additional activity it would to display the Custom Columns even though I was not using them and was viewing in thumbnail mode. While in thumbnail mode I right clicked in a white space and saw that the custom columns were still checked off. When I unchecked the special columns, XY came back to it's normal speedy thumbnail display.
Don, maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't seem that having once set the folder to CCs that it should effect the folder thumbnail display speed when you are simply viewing in thumbnail mode. I can't tell you exactly what I had for FVS, but you would think since I was viewing in thumbs, XY would not do all the special CC work/activity needed to display those CCs when they aren't being displayed.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Dramatic slowdown in previously cached thumbnail display
What you are missing is sorting. If the column is visibile (i.e. the column header is shown when column headers are shown) then sorting by this column should be possible. Therefore XY has to retrieve the values even in Thumbs view.

Re: Dramatic slowdown in previously cached thumbnail display
I know the column headers were not shown though. If they were I would have realized what was happening sooner. I say that with confidence because I never have column headers displayed unless I'm in "detail" view. As I mentioned I had to right click the white space to discover I had some CCs checked off that shouldn't be in thumbnail. Is it possible the sorting was taking place without the column header displayed? In any case, thanks Don, all is well and no harm done.

Re: Dramatic slowdown in previously cached thumbnail display
By that I wanted to say: A column is visible if its column header is shown when column headers are shown. When column headers are not shown a column can still be "visible" in that sense.visibile (i.e. the column header is shown when column headers are shown)

That basically means all columns that were visible in details view.

Yes. Thanks finding a much clearer way to say it.

Re: Dramatic slowdown in previously cached thumbnail display
Ok got it, so in my situation, the special CCs have to be hidden in order for them not to affect the display when in thumbnail view even with column headers off. The sort was by "name" in the CC "details" view as it was in the "thumbnail" view, but the display of the thumbs in thumbnail view will still be affected by the background operations/calculations required by the other CCs (i.e., click - makecoffee, aspect ratio, etc.) in details view. Thank you all for the clarifications.
Edit : Please correct me though if I said anything above that is incorrect.
