I'm a little embarrassed to have to ask two newbie questions in one day, but . . . I'm using XYplorer 14.00.0100 on Windows 7 64-bit.
I've been trying to get a few panes set up the way I'd like them. All the panes I've worked on have been the Active Pane (in a Dual Pane layout). In one, the files were arranged in alphabetical order, but I couldn't see any other information without using the horizontal slide at the bottom. I thus moved the columns so that I could see not just the name but also the size and the Modified date without having to use the horizontal slide. I then went into View/Folder View Settings (where Enable Folder View Settings was checked) and clicked on Save Folder View. I then closed XYplorer. When I reopened it a minute or two later, the view I had arranged was gone, and all I could see in the Pane was the list of files. To see anything more, I had to use the horizontal slide. I tried again, with a similar result. I then decided to put the Folder View icon on my toolbar and use that. It claimed it was saving the view I had again set up, but when I went to a different folder and then came back to the original one, it was no longer set up as I wanted it. The folder view had yet again not been saved. I also tried a different folder, one I wanted arranged according to Date Modified. But I again could not get the view to be saved. I don't know whether I'm doing something wrong or I'm seeing a bug. I hope someone can help sort this out.
Thanks in advance.
Save Folder View isn't working
Re: Save Folder View isn't working
Do you have settings on exit enabled. I think XY by default has this option disabled. So you may want to check the configuration to see if that is the case.
You can also save settings selectively. Please check the options under the file menu. Alternatively you can also add a toolbar icon for saving the settings. Please see that the right click on the toolbar would offer you the selective save options.
Also, I understand the second time you hadn't closed XY but only navigated to some other folder. I guess you did that in another tab. The tab settings get preference over FVS and hence you lost the FVS. However; if you would have clicked on restore folder view, it would have restored it successfully. See http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11295 for the exact opposite stuff I had reported earlier. Even, I have been asking Don (developer) to give FVS preference over tab settings, but I haven't had luck.
And if you are navigating with the same tab, you can check what settings were saved for that FVS.
Don,
Can we atleast get a tweak for FVS to have preference over the tab settings. Users with workflow like having a folder with FVS open in one tab, they temporarily loose the settings after going to another tab (can be restored by restoring to folder view)
I for one would find this immensely useful, since I can then target particular columns only for specific folders.

Re: Save Folder View isn't working
Nerdweed, thanks VERY much for your extremely useful reply. I may not have time today to explore the possibilities you've mentioned, but I'll do so soon. Moreover, you've helped not just to identify a possible source of the problem but also to make me realize that I've just scratched the surface of XYplorer's configuration options.
Many thanks once again!

Re: Save Folder View isn't working
Are you talking about the name column getting wider after you've narrowed it? You might also look at the menu bar Tools > Customize List > Auto Size Columns.
Some of my folders have system files with huge names like
ntuser.dat{54bea880-8f79-11df-8a73-00155d00078a}.TMContainer00000000000000000001.regtrans-ms
The name column will expand to accommodate the name... Very annoying.

May be - thats what caused OP to use FVS. I focussed only on the FVS stuff

Re: Save Folder View isn't working
You can limit this: Configuration | Styles | Autosize columns maximum width (0 = unlimited)kunkel321 wrote:Are you talking about the name column getting wider after you've narrowed it? You might also look at the menu bar Tools > Customize List > Auto Size Columns.

Re: Save Folder View isn't working
I haven't yet had a chance to look into all the interesting possibilities nerdweed has suggested in his initial reply, but I came by to see
whether there had been any other responses. Thanks, kunkel321; I think you've identified why the pane showed only the filenames (without the slider) and perhaps why the Save Folder View didn't work. Like you, I've got a bunch of files at the bottom of the pane with absurdly long filenames. I don't care whether I can see the entire filename in such cases, and I'm not happy to hear that the name column will expand to accommodate all these absurdly long names. I had assumed/hoped that the user's judgment could prevail.
Admin, thanks for telling me about the option in Configuration to limit auto-size columns, but for me that may not be very useful. I'd really want to be able to decide for each pane how wide the columns should be and what limit if any there should be. For me, one size doesn't fit all. In general, XYplorer seems to be wonderfully flexible and gives the user so much power, I'm surprised that this may not be the case here. Though perhaps I still haven't adequately understood what's possible.
Thanks again to everyone who has responded.

Re: Save Folder View isn't working
My configuration was already set to save settings on exit.nerdweed wrote:Do you have settings on exit enabled. I think XY by default has this option disabled. So you may want to check the configuration to see if that is the case.
I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "please check the options under the file menu." Do you simply mean Settings Special-->Save Folder View Settings? This is good to know, but apparently the length of the filenames in the pane overrides any arrangement I try to make (as kunkel321 has pointed out). After admin pointed out the config setting 0=unlimited, I played around with various limitations, and so far I've found 215 works pretty well. I'd much prefer, however, if I could set a different number for EACH folder. But at least 215 gives me more control than I had with 0=unlimited.nerdweed wrote: You can also save settings selectively. How do I do that?nerdweed wrote: And if you are navigating with the same tab, you can check what settings were saved for that FVS.
Anyway, many thanks to you for all your detailed help, and also to kunkel321 and admin for the information about Auto Size Columns. (Hmmm...I've just re-read kunkel's message and realized that I may have more control than I thought. I have now UNCHECKED Auto Size Columns. I'm not sure, but I think that may give me total control over the size of each column in each folder.)

I was talking about this
