Every time I switched back to XY (after running file operations in various pograms) it made me wait for 10 seconds and longer before I could click or do anything at all.
The statusbar told me it was busy "refreshing the tree". However, the slowdown still continued (with the same status bar message) even when the tree was not showing.
I finally tracked it down to the setting "Check existence of subfolders in tree".
Is there a reason for an invisible tree to need monitoring?

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
Can't seem to find a "refreshing the tree" message. Is this the exact wording?

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
The exact wording was "Tree is refreshing" - I think. Cannot reproduce it here on my home PC. The message popped up in blue color in the status bar, with a leading blue arrow in front of it.
Nothing else I changed, same copy of XY running from my stick. Maybe it had to with different circumstances, after all. Low memory or whatever. Although no other programs seemed affected. Restarting XY didn't make a difference. It simply froze the whole system for at least 10 seconds, then reflected the changes in the folder and everything was back to normal.
Will take a screenshot next time I run into it again.

Cannot take a screenshot - nothing responds as long as XY is busy refreshing.
"tree refreshing ..." - that's the message in the status bar, literally, including the 3 dots.
And yes, it is indeed dependent on
a) enabled setting "Check existence of subfolders in tree"
b) tabs showing branches of a relatively large tree (>100.000 files in nested folders)

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
OK, I see. But I cannot do anything. It was a fundamental design decision to keep the Tree in synch even if it is invisible.
What you can do is lock the tree. An invisible locked tree should be totally instantaneous.

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
I wouldn't mind syncing an invisible tree if only it didn't take that long.
Running other file managers parallel with the same tree and tab views shows no perceptible delay. XY however keeps getting worse over time, more precisely:
1) It doesn't seem to have a problem the first few times I dive into a large tree.
2) But the more folders I sort in other managers, the worse it gets each time I switch back to XY.
Disabling "Check existence of subfolders" reduces the delay somwhat, but not completely. I still have to wait 5,6,7 seconds - ever increasing the longer I work.
Locking the tree does not help, either.
Any other settings I could try?

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
AFAIK, unless you have the tweak RefreshTreeOnTabChange set to 1, this "refreshing tree..." message can only appear when you actively refresh the tree by clicking View | Refresh (F5), or View | Refresh Tree (F4).
What exactly are you doing to make it appear?

It was indeed set to 1. Swiched it off to 0 and report back later this week.admin wrote:... unless you have the tweak RefreshTreeOnTabChange set to 1 ... ,
BTW, "RefreshListOnly=0" - should I fool with this setting, too?

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
No, that should not be related.
That RefreshTreeOnTabChange tweak is totally undocumented (it's not even in change log). How come you set it to 1???

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
Guess I must have read about it here in the forum. Which makes me wonder why, there might have been a good reason for it. What does it do, anyway? The tree seems to get refreshed either way, 0 or 1.

Re: Refreshing an invisible tree?
If auto-refresh is on the tree should be in good state at any point, but there are situations when the Windows messaging fails, and hence auto-refresh. With this tweak on you get a full tree refresh on each tab change. It had been wished by exactly one user and for some weird reason I added it, don't remember. He probably paid me...
