A little piece of magic

Post by prino »

Today, for whatever reason, W7 started to mess with file types (suddenly lots of files were turning into "z/OS JCL"), and nothing seemed to be able to reverse this, not even some massive deletions of file types from the registry. Eventually I stumbled on Types. It's tiny, just 196K, it's magic, and it does exactly what's needed and probably a lot more.

Yep, Types is useful, but I find this tool even better:

I've had nothing but grief with that one, somehow the various functions do not seem to be independent of each other.

What do you mean, prino?
Would you please elaborate a bit more on what went wrong?
This is important to me because I don't want to mess up other people's machines. With Types the changes didn't stick in some cases. Mostly, I need to associate extensions with portable default programs. A very nice feature of XY, btw, but not all people have XY, and Windows itself only allows installed programs as defaults.

"Friendly names" changed inexplicably when I changed applications, and one of the relics that I still have is that I have two "LibreOffice Writer" entries in the "Open With" menu for RTF files, and despite some serious deleting of data from the registry, they do not want to be reduced to a single entry.

Thanks. Relieved to hear it doesn't concern the stuff I am dealing with.
