Context menus are supposed to open at the mouse cursor position. Anything else would feel weird IMO.

That is untrue. If you click on something, context menus are supposed to open at the mouse cursor position. On the other hand, which I had noticed feeling awkward when I just moved to the latest beta and was going to mention it sometime, if you open the context menu via keyboard shortcut (the dedicated context menu key, or shift F10), the context menu should open where your current focus is (in the case of a file manager, the most-recently-selected file. Anything else would, and indeed does, feel weird.

That 's right. It's on my, i.e. Mesh's, list.

On a related note, another feature/wish to make the Context Menu even more powerful (at least for me):
A setting/config to allow the menu to shift to a specific list item (default) or most used or last used. This allows less mouse travel.

Meaning:
Currently the menu opens either below the cursor/focus or above (depending on where it has room to not go off the screen. So the user has to move up or down to find the item to select. If you use an item many times, it can be faster to have the menu shifted so the cursor/focus is at the same level. so you just right click and the option is there.
i can create a screenshot if it is hard to visualize what i mean here.

I don't know if this is easy because it can depend if you are using a built in context menu in the application that may not allow that level of setting Y axis, or it is a fully customization form that opens allowing the position to be set at any place.

If it would be better to post this as a new wish topic, just let me know.
