Labels/Tags removed on Folder move/copy

Are Labels/Tags on folders to be retained when moved/copied to another volume or is the intent to have the metadata removed/lost?

As far as I can recall from the 'new feature' announcement it's suppose to be done smartly; Meaning it should save them on move and copy and remove them from the db on delete, with some variance when you're overwriting existing files.

I'm confused. If I'm in XY and perform any kind of move or copy function form "A" to "B" same physical volume or different physical volume, shouldn't the labels and tags be applied to the target "B", for whatever source "A" has for labels and tags?

AFAIK tags are not copied along with the files.
XY help said :
XY help wrote:Moving Items
Moving items, the tags will move along with the items. When moving an item and replacing an already existing one, any existing tags from source items will be set to destination items, replacing any previously existing tags on the destination items. If a source item does not have tag, but the previously existing destination item does, they will be preserved.

Copying Items
Copying items, the tags will not be copied along with the items, in an effort to keep your database tidy and avoid multiplying tags which could eventually slow things down. Any previously existing items will keep their original tags.

i didn't really bothered to use(and study) tags as i just used labels and that was fine, but eventually this feature become useful and i found drawbacks same as Zardoz2293.. :|

I've used NTFS since NT 3.5 and would be nice to see it as a Named Stream (ADS). Then Don just has to write a gateway to and from NTFS/FAT??. Leave the limitations to the FAT?? version and enhance with ADS for NTFS, with the gateway. :P

Unfortunately ADS also wouldn't cover files on network folders, in addition to FAT. Also, ADS is slightly suspicious to virus scanners.
As ADS would require pretty much the old systems for FAT (USB drives in particular) and network drives, which are both common, I don't think adding ADS would be beneficial.

As for adding the option to include label/tags when copying or moving files, I get the impression that speed was an important consideration. In the past, Don has reconsidered enabling functionality as computers have gotten (much) faster, so maybe?

ADS not on network folders? Since when? You are referencing non-NTFS systems? Everything looks suspicious to virus scanners.

Yes, I keep hearing about speed. However, XY has the folder/file count feature you can configure, which is surly slower than label/tags issue or watching paint dry.

You're right that Windows file servers can and probably do use NTFS. I'm not sure however, that CIFS (the current Windows file-sharing protocol) supports ADS editing.

For some reason (compiled VB6? :P), XYplorer doesn't always agree with security software in general. To (potentially) add to this misery... :)

XYplorer is rather venerable (1997, going by the About-dialog) and some things have later become available. Up to Don, as always.

such copies will presumably require check for tags existence before operation - i asked Don for "watch over tagged item" feature, so at least not copy but alert use that source of operation has tags = he said it will slow down everything too much, so it's no chance.

Thanks you for that, its been on the back of my mind the last few days to figure out the cause of this slow down.
While 'show folder sizes' and 'show item count with folder sizes' were off I had 'show folder size on properties tab' on.
I didn't figure that XYplorer is calculating the sizes before hand, just in case it might need to display them in the properties tab.

So I agree, its as slow and as much fun as watching paint dry.

The XYplorer system has several advantages over ADS.

You won't inadvertently send out comment information with files (like some do with MS office docs).

Searching and editing a central database of tags is much faster.

Using a database model leaves open the possibility of multi-user tagging, which would be a killer feature and I think is planned.

Not in my version. :?

Well ... maybe not in my version either, I thought it got faster after I unchecked that option and mostly it did.
When it used to be very slow to access some folders (I observed that these are folders nested several levels deep with siblings and descendants that might contain a large amount of files but that could be unrelated to the issue), now its only slow part of the time.

So I'm not sure what causes this, but it did improve some after unchecking that option.

One thing is for sure, performing a copy which is under XY's control with the Labels/Tags not going with the file is a significant shortfall of the capability. If performance is a concern, then a configuration option should exist to disable, otherwise it's on by default (Frankly, I'd never provide the ability to turn it off. If you have an issue with the performance upgrade or limit the use. Performance hits should be short lived with new technology updates. Not pushing expensive equipment upgrades just the facts.) Object behavior should always be predictable and consistent.
