I would really like to use the Label, Tag and Comments in XYP. I see it as a great feature. But FOR ME it is kind of a waste of time. As soon as I'd copy/move the file(s) to my second computer, where I'm also running XYP, all my effort is lost. Also, one of my back-up methods is synching to an external USB drive. Which loses the work that's been done.
I guess the only way to insure tags/labels/comments aren't lost is to do a disk image on a regular basis. Especially if you could experience a system crash.
Isn't there anything that could be figured out?

all tags etc are saved in one file in <xydata>\tag.dat, so making an image of drive won't preserve tags either.

Yes. All XY activity must preserve the Tags and Labels, it's as simple as that. (However, implementing is not simple, otherwise it would already be done).kodyman wrote:I would really like to use the Label, Tag and Comments in XYP. I see it as a great feature. Isn't that a given: Tags & Labels are an XY feature. Only some XY disk activity supports Tags & Labels. Therefore, anything that isn't XY won't be supported.eil wrote:i was refering to kodyman's words about doing a disk image.Zardoz2293 wrote:I don't understand. an "image"? What feature is that in XY?
My position is all XY activity needs to support Tags & Labels if you are going to be using them, and if anything, there's a user-definable cap size that could be specified to limit number of objects being tracked, assuming of course you put a limit on it.

Re: Labels/Tags removed on Folder move/copy
Making a disk image isn't a feature of XYP. I was talking of making an exact back-up of the entire disk using a program like Macrium Reflect http://www.macrium.com/ or similar program. I thought by doing so, while more work, would allow for backing up the labels, tags & comments added to XYP. But maybe not???
Maybe at some point something will be figured out on how to preserve them and I'll feel more comfortable using labels, tags & comments. It's not a big deal killer for me. XYP does so many other things so well I don't see using anything else. It's one of those things that just would be nice.
I do not know all of the ins & outs of back-ups other than making sure I have a couple in the event my system would crash. Luckily this has only happened twice to me over the years.eil wrote:all tags etc are saved in one file in <xydata>\tag.dat, so making an image of drive won't preserve tags either.

Using Reflect is disk image mode would preserved XY data, provided the volume imaged contained the XY metadata. Example: In almost all cases "C:"kodyman wrote:Making a disk image isn't a feature of XYP. A couple of backups = very wise. I've noticed that Reflect's verify isn't performing a verify, not sure what is really gong on but you can't verify 100GB of data in 1 second, at least not on my non-quantum computer.
"preserve" XY's Tags & Labels: From my perspective this model should function exactly like file security exists under NTFS, this way no extra stuff to remember or not remember and again only "preserved" if XY is used.
I don't see a need for the Tags & Labels as it isn't preserved in many ways, a more stateful way is to tag via how you name the file or filter and then apply a Color Filter. Results in no performance hit, no issue of who or what made the copy/move or where too.

find file i mentioned in quotes: use Go -> Go to Application Data folder. all your tags/labels/comments are in tag.dat -> just backup this file, and that's it.kodyman wrote:I was talking of making an exact back-up of the entire disk using a program like Macrium Reflect http://www.macrium.com/ or similar program. Thanks eil
For the time being, when I can, I think I'll just stick with including a keyword or two in my file name(s) to search on. It may not be as flexible but it's worked for me in the past.
