Re: +++ BREAKING NEWS: XYplorer goes twinBASIC +++
Licensing:
I have a lifetime license from back in 2002(?). Been a happy XY user since, although I use only a subset of its features.
Sounds like the license is still valid for x64.
Nice, but after 20+ years I already felt like I'm cheating you a bit.
Just a thought: to reward the developer and incentivise ongoing development, IMO it would be fair to consider this a new product and get a 50% discount on a new x64 lifetime license.
I like how the Affinity suite works for both sides, you pay lifetime for the current major version, when v3 comes out in a few years, you can upgrade or continue with v2 forever if you don't need the features. If you want the MacOS version too, you get 50% (or you pay lifetime + 50% for "everything we make").
Tricky, there will be lots of users complaining when "lifetime" is suddenly limited. I guess there are also a lot of users like me who would happily pay like 40 bucks again. I could donate, but you'd have to ask for it somehow. Sell me a little optional goodie like, dunno, an iconpack of the elder xy wizard giving perceivedCopySpeed+20
Bottom line: I suggest you come up with anything that triggers lifetimers to give you some money. The big x64 step is the right moment to do so.
P.S. Earlier I was asking ChatGPT about "mac finder replacement like xyplorer on windows". Looks like PathFinder is it. $30/year subscription for one tool on one platform, nope. (before that, I asked ChatGPT how to "Shift-delete" a file permanently using only the keyboard. After many rounds, the solution is: select file, cmd+Delete, on the confirm popup press Cmd+F7 to unlock tabbing, press Tab, press Space. This is INSANE. Consider me a day1 customer for future Mac+Linux versions)

I have had the same thought and would be happy 'donate'/whatever. The x64 deserves it.

Yeah, I could have done that, but I rather go hunting for new customers. Lifetime is lifetime. And it's not a new product, just a continuation of the 32-bit product which will more or less stop being further developed in a few days.
Good timing actually since I just bought a new guitar.

Recording King RD-06 (2nd hand) -- it's a fairly cheap one, but nevertheless great. Never saw/heard a bad Recording King.

The last one I purchased (on eBay) was a used Alhambra 7P used Spanish Classical guitar Guitar in 2015. In looking at the Recording King website, it doesn't look like they make a classical style. Not that I'm in the market for one.

Yep, AFAIK it's only steel string. Very well-made instruments. Robust & Precise. Great action and correct fret placement, good woods.

Re: +++ BREAKING NEWS: XYplorer goes twinBASIC +++
I've had my license for about 5 years now, and yeah I would definitely pay for a new product if x64 was deemed as such.
That being said, over the last 5 years, I've purchased and gifted just short of 10 licenses to various friends/family.
It might not be the same as a selfless donation, but I like to think that not only is Don getting his money, but through gifting a license I've introduced new people to the product who have gone on to become avid users and continue to spread the word. Who knows how many new users that may result in over time

Re: +++ BREAKING NEWS: XYplorer goes twinBASIC +++
I have also gifted a license to a friend (just recently) with the explicit prospect / promise to him that it was announced that he would be able to continue using that license also for the x64 version, since Don had announced it like that. Apart from that, I had previously bought a 2nd license unnecessarily just to support the project.
So, voluntary donations are good. Also, nobody holds you back from buying a new license without need. I also like the idea of unnecessary extras like icon sets or whatever that could be sold for a few extra bucks. But as for the application of the lifetime license ... I am counting on Don keeping his word.
I dunno why this is a topic all of a sudden.

Re: +++ BREAKING NEWS: XYplorer goes twinBASIC +++
ok I just donated 40 buck because XYplorer is kinda important in my life. Thank you for power-search and Ctrl-P copies all paths for selected files.
Comes with two requests:
1. buy top notch strings, they're too cheap to cheap out on 'em. Like putting crap tires on a Ferrari
2. somewhere along the x64 line, put a high profile note out there "if you like what I'm doing more than you paid for, donate here for my *next* guitar: {paypal}
I bought only two guitars in my life. The acoustic Yamaha I gave to a friend who felt bad about taking his $$$ custom to alcohol-infused parties. The B.C.Rich Ironbird (which was advertised as a Warlock, the Kerry King Klampfe, but I bought it anyway since I was already there) still collects dust, waiting for me to be somewhat competent...
P.S. in theory, I like the concept of "paying to kickstart new features that would otherwise be considered too niche". I'd drop another 80 to get a configurable, short-cut-able "open with" thing that does not depend on whatever crappy settings Windows has natively. No, I don't want to open my .jpg in "Windows app du jour" or 3D-Explorer. It's irfanview (preview, convert, crop) , LeftHandPix (view), Affinity (colour edit). And once configured in XY, I never want to touch it again, or see the stupid Win defaults.

I usually go for D'Addario EJ-16 12-53, but recently I developed a taste for D'Addario NB1253 Nickel Bronze!

Already exists: Tools | Customize File Associations... Thanks for another 80!cajhin wrote: ↑18 Sep 2025 21:50 P.S. in theory, I like the concept of "paying to kickstart new features that would otherwise be considered too niche".
