I see your point Filehero, but I used %winsysdir% exactly to circumvent the possible absence of C:\Windows\System32 in %PATH%.
Then the only possible explanation is that %winsysdir% is a shorthand for the first path in %PATH% (...no pun intended)

I suspect there's something more obscure deep down.

Marco wrote:%winsysdir% in an XY-only variable.

Try doing the steps outlined above and then pasting in the command prompt

Code: Select all

C:\Windows\cscript.exe //nologo "C:\Users\swkunkel\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer\Scripts\SimpleUpdater\HTTP_checker.vbs" "http://www.xyplorer.com/download/xyplorer_11.90_beta_noinstall.zip" "Sun, 20 Jul 1969 08:17:40 GMT" "C:\Users\swkunkel\AppData\Roaming\XYplorer\Scripts\SimpleUpdater\HTTP_response.txt"
Okay, I freshly installed the latest XY, then did this again.
Again, it doesn't work unless the extra \System32\ folder is put in the path.
Upon adding that, and running it, cscript opened (or at least a command-prompt-style window with "cscript" in the title bar did).
It didn't have any text in it. It stayed open for about a second, then closed.

Can you try rev 10.41 ( http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... =30#p80003 ) and see if it works?

OK, so the cscript does work, but i guess you are still getting the error you reported in your first post, right?
If so, I guess the file is created much slowly or worse not created at all.
To test the former case, can you insert this between run command and $status in the script?

Code: Select all

   wait (5000);
Don't step, just insert that in 10.42 version and run script normally.
Thanks.

Okay, am on my Vista machine again, using XY 11.80.0100...

RE Marco, 10.41 in step mode gets the same results as above.

RE Seren, Delay makes no difference
Image
Same error messages.

Please note: By "works" I mean that I was getting a Windows error "cannot find..." By adding \system32\, that error went away and cscript ran. I don't think the Updater worked though? Not even sure what it's supposed to do though, so not sure.

Ok thanks for checking.
So, now can you try this:
1) In your fresh install, copy the script to scripts folder.
2) Select the script, enable step mode from Scripting menu and use "load selected script file" to run it.
3) Continue until 77 ($status=...) and click "cancel script" when you are at step 77.
4) You should see a folder called Simpleupdater created in scripts folder, go inside and check if a file called HTTP_response.txt is there.

This file is key for the script to work. Let us know if it is there. thanks.

I can already tell you it does... That is where the first error (see post with 3 screenshots, above) occurs.

Edit: I can do a screencast with step mode, if that helps...

No, not the "HTTP_checker.vbs" file. The script is looking for the "HTTP_response.txt" file at step 77. Do you see that file?

Sorry, My bad. The txt file is NOT appearing.

I actually stopped the script in the middle (so that the folder would not be removed), then manually added the HTTP_response.txt and reran the script... Again, it could not find it.

No, creating the file yourself won't help. That file has to be created when you run the command (step 76 in the screenshot you posted). The reason you see an error in step 77 is because the file is not created.
By the way, to further test, follow these:
1) On step 76, right-click and use "Copy Command (Parsed and Resolved)" to copy the command to clipboard.
2) Paste this in a text file and rename file extension as .bat
3) Double-click this bat file.
Is the HTTP_response.txt created?

Do you have any antivirus or firewall running in background?

I have Norton on my desktop, and Sophos on my laptop.
I just tried disabling protection for 15 minutes on Norton and did the above steps... Got the same as the last screenshot.

I've completely re assigned my Keyboard shortcuts on Xy (i.e. the ones for making new files, etc), though I don't imagine that would matter.

It's no big deal if it never works.... Mostly I'm just testing it for fun.
The fact that I get the same results on both computers makes me think it's just some dumb setting I set a long time ago and forgot about.

Maybe I'll try to do a fresh portable XY install on a thumb drive and try that way--just to see what happens.
Thanks you two, for you help on this.

The first 2 errors are expected, but the third one which ends with HTTP_response.txt should have created a text file in the SimpleUpdater folder, did it?

No, definitely the only file getting created is the VBS one.

Not sure if it matters, but when I created the temp.bat as per above, I had to use a second instance of XY... The first one was locked up with the script step dialog.
