I may have missed something as we do have portable file associations.
Can Explorer also do portable file icons?

no. it's registry-dependant. and even thought something may be done, that will be too heavy for swift browsing.

Yep, it's spectacular. Does anybody know a file manager that can do this? Total icon control, generic and specific, files and folders, entire GUI, fully portable, full speed, simple usage? I don't. Not even close.

damn, i so much used icons and folder-walls in past, then dumped it 'cause of portability, and now i need to gather icons again. don't know how Don managed to make it fluent though

Hmmm just thinking aloud - don't be mad!
CTBs and SC menus already support multiple-icons apps/libraries - which can even be browsed in the Properties pane.
So do you think it would be feasible to add the " /#" suffix support in PFI (without too much work)?

For example, it would be perfect for all kind of "virtual" folders or replicas of system folders, e.g. when you use your own "My ..." without the garbage that pollutes the official ones:
?:\Personal\My Documents\>%winsysdir%\shell32.dll /127

I haven't used PFI but seems like one of those things that will make me lose days and days looking for cute icons for each file type I encounter
Just a concern: if *.fnd is associated to Search Tabs, what happens to "real" *.fnd files?

Same as without PFI: both have the same icon.

No, forget it. That would be speed and memory wise a totally different story. But there are apps that can extract all icons from shell32.dll in a second and save them as ICO files.

Wow thank you Don! This is a great feature! But... unfortunately I don't like it very much because like Marco said, you end up spending up a lot of time searching for cute icons. I mean, last night after downloading the latest beta and playing with the feature, I ended up spending 3 hours looking for cool and cute icons.

Use nirsoft's IconExtract.

Love their softwares. Anyway, you can use that software to extract all icons from various executables, dlls, and shell32.dll all in one go.

Is the pattern 2*.txt supposed to work (meaning: files positioned anywhere, having names starting with 2 and the extension txt), or was I expecting too much?
