Interface elements hidden from users shouldn't react to clicks.
Users still have double clicks for expansion.

You're probably right.
Although one could argue it's okay to hide the icons but keep the function, after all the setting is called "Show Expansion Icons", not "Enable Expansion".
But I agree it's totally unexpected behavior, even shocking.

PS. Btw, you're right that technically it didn't violate the setting description.
It just led to bad user experience. That's why I didn't put it into "Bugs".
