More information on new features!

Post by petersboulton »

I find the info on new features, e.g. today's at https://www.xyplorer.com/release_22.30.php could be made much more helpful. On today's release, for example, it doesn't explain how to access the new cell context menu and I'm having to search through the new help file to work it out. (It's pressing Ctrl+click, but you don't say so in the release page!)

This is not the first time I've experienced this issue. The new functionality is great and it must take a considerable time to think of the ideas, code them, test them, update the help file etc.. I really appreciate the care, thought and work that goes into XYplorer. Just a few more minutes spent on communicating how to access the new features would be greatly appreciated!

(Also, I tried the Cell Quick Search option - it never finds anything! :veryconfused: Am I misunderstanding? I select an item in the list, Ctrl+click on (for example) the 'Ext' cell and choose 'Quick Search'. Nothing is found. (Surely at least one thing should be found - the item I clicked on!))

You probably did not see the note "Page still in progress. Please check in a little later."

Now the page is ready.

Quick Search by Ext works fine here. :?

I apologise. I didn't. Although why not upload everything concurrently to avoid the confusion?

If Quick Search works for you then I must be doing something wrong. But please check out a small movie capture I just uploaded which shows it (apparently) not working for me:

I look forward to learning what I did wrong.

Thanks.

Oh well, you found a bug. If this little button is pressed, the search is channeled through the Find Files tab with all its other filters and conditions...

The fix is actually just a change in the caption:

Code: Select all

! Quick Find Files: When Quick Find Files has been turned on in the Quick
Search dialog then the search via Cell Context Menu was still called
"Quick Search" although it was channeled through the Find Files interface.
Fixed. Now the menu item caption is "Find Files" in that case.
If you decide to use Find Files when doing a Quick Search then you have to live with it. :)

Hmmmm.. if you say so! :veryconfused:

From an outsider's point of view, I just see the context menu and the option to quickly search for items matching the Ctrl+clicked cell. Which is good.

As an outsider (who's used XYplorer since 2008) I didn't see it as a shortcut to populating the F3 dialog... I saw it as separate, different and very neat! It is, of course, your product - I'm just trying to say how I as an unsophisticated outsider saw it.

The question is: Why did you press that button in my screenshot?

I didn't knowingly press it!

My interpretation that this was a completely new way of quick searching, not tied to any existing functionality. Seemed nice and clean and simple.

1) In the next beta you will clearly see in the Cell Context Menu that you won't get a Quick Search.

2) If you want a Quick Search unpress the button that says you don't want a Quick Search. :)

(1) - fair enough

(2) - how is the normal user to know that unpressing the button on the F3 dialog should determine the behaviour of the Ctrl-click context menu?

Always the developer's decision, I do understand. I am just a stupid user. I was just trying to give helpful feedback. I won't respond any further as I've said everything I can. I still love XYplorer!

Good question. I have to think about that. That setting probably should be in another, more central place...

I think I found a better solution now:

Code: Select all

    * Quick Find Files: From now on the "Find Files" button in the Quick Search
dialog *only* affects searches triggered from this dialog. Other Quick
Searches are not affected and run normally.
Good improvement. Thanks!

Thank you. Yes, that makes a lot of sense to me! (Not that that is a yardstick of anything! )
