Out of curiosity what are the limitations that keeps you from implementing all three?

just a thought that suddenly came to my head: an improvement of Grid could make colour grouping, just like now it make each second line blue - make each second group blue(depending on sorting determining what is "group" criteria).

@eil: You can pretty much already do that, if you set

Configuration | Colors and Styles | Highlights & Dark Mode | Grid style == Alternate Groups

and then sort by various groupable columns. (eg. Type, Date, etc.)

1) The visual separation in groups (which implies the conceptual separation in groups for each property that supports grouping).
2) The option to collapse individual groups.
3) Remembering the collapsed state for each grouping for each folder.

I don't see this coming anytime soon. But of the three features the first one is clearly less unlikely than the others.
Another important benefit is group selection. For example, you can select all text files with a single click when grouped by type. Combine that with Ctrl + Click and Shift + Click to select multiple groups, like selecting all text files and Word documents in just 2 clicks.

You might want to look at View | Tab | Type Stats and Filter... (there is also a toolbar button for this). Normally you can filter items via the popup menu. But when you hold CTRL while clicking one of its popup menu items, this item type, eg *.txt files, is added to the current selections.

It's not like a "change of heart" would be the relevant thing here...
As Don already mentioned: He's got a huge list of features (and a small list of bugs) he wants/needs to adress...
Combined with the fact that Don is the only coder here and doing technical support and some customer support as well, his main limiting factor is and will always be the time he is able to invest to code.

And, yes, I know we have an awesome community, especially our admins highend and horst, who take a huge load of customer support issues off of Don's shoulders.
