paste special: URL as .url link file

Post by autocart »

Hi Don,
Hi all,

I did a quick search and could not find something like that, so if it already exists, (1), please, forgive me and (2), please, let me know where it is and how to do it. So, my thought is:

Every now and then I have an URL that I want to save as a .url link file in the file system.
Theoretically and practically, there are ways to do that with the browser but it is quite cumbersome for me and seems to be different from browser to browser as well.

Therefore, if XY supported a feature to "paste special" an URL from the clipboard as a .url file, that would be awesome.

Thx for any thoughts, regards, S.

Whats the problem to drag and drop the URL from any browser into an XYplorer pane.
Its automatically stored as .url file.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
Portable XYplorer (actual version, including betas)
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69

Ah, ok, if I highlight the whole URL text in the address bar, then I can drag the text of the URL to the XY file list. And that actually does create a .url file. (Tested and works in Firefox and Brave browser.)

Thank you, Horst!

You don't even need to higlight the URL.
In Firefox I just take the lock symbol on the left of the URL and drag it.

@Don: While we are on this subject, one thing that has always vexed me, is that URL files that get created are uppercase extension, is there a reason for that? would you consider making them lowercase, or would that upset others.

Untested, but based on similar experiments I did a long time ago:

Change the case of HKCR\.URL to HKCR\.url in the registry.
If that doesn'fix it: change HKLM\Software\Classes\.URL as well as HKCU\Software\Classes\.URL

A restart of XYplorer might be necessary.

No feedback? Did you try it? Did it work as intended?

My question was to Don, so I was waiting for him to reply before I did. Haven't tried it yet, thanks anyway.

Thanks for clarifying. Will keep that in mind the next time I think about helping someone on this forum.

I get the impression you are a bit sensitive, just to clarify I meant I just didn't want Don to miss my question directed at him, while we had a back and forth discussion and then my query goes unanswered because it gets lost in a sea of posts. (as will now probably happen) I would have replied to you in my followup post if you were patient.

Not exactly.

After hanging around on these forums for a while, I noticed that some moderators here quite often answer questions a bit grumpy, or even somewhat condescending. And don't always reply/ post feedback.

To prevent being treated that same way, I set my boundaries a lot stricter than I would do on other forums.

The uppercase extension is served like that from the source (the browser, eg Firefox, but not Edge). I agree this is not acceptable. I will change it to lowercase.
