Preview looping audio files but...perfect! (no delay)

Post by chumbo »

I'm a musician and having the audio preview and looping feature built-in XY is an absolute blessing as it allows to quickly preview drumloops for example.
Unfortunately, currently there is a minor but noticeable delay every time it loops back around to the beginning.
That improvement alone could be a big selling point to attract a whole new community of users (i.e. musicians).

Icing on the cake: an audio wave form display while it plays but that's absolutely not a necessity, just a big plus that's sure to please

By loop you mean this?

Configuration | Preview | Preview | Audio/Video preview -> Play Again

Before I dive into the code, here are some infos (the last 3 lines) on the little known power feature of sub looping (= loop a certain part of an audio file):

Code: Select all

v8.90.0018 - 2010-03-26 11:58
    * Audio Preview revisited: Here are the revised Keyboard and Mouse
tricks, including a fix for Shift+Space which did not stop the
      clip.
      Keyboard shortcuts:
        Space bar Start/Pause playing.
Shift+Space bar Go to beginning and stop.
      Mouse on the progress bar:
Left Mouse Down Go to mouse position.
        Right Mouse Down Start/Pause playing.
Shift+Left Mouse Down Go to beginning.
Shift+Right Mouse Down Go to beginning and stop.
Ctrl+Left Mouse Down Set start of sub loop.
Ctrl+Right Mouse Down Set end of sub loop.
        Ctrl+Alt+Mouse Down Reset sub loop.
If you sub loop do you also get that delay?

Hmm, I'm not sure how I'm supposed be using those subloop features? Are there any prerequisites? Any settings I'm supposed to enable?

As I have it now, I either keep my left mouse down on the file's icon to audition it and it ends when I let go or loops for as long as I keep it down.
Or I've also set it to Auto-Preview and I just click it once and it will then follow the behavior set in Configuration/Preview/Audio/Video Preview, typically 'Play again' of course since that's what this topic is about. (just interesting that in the first scenario, there is no setting, it just by default will loop).

So for ex., if I try to Ctrl+Left Mouse Down to Set start of sub loop, it just adds to the selected files as it would for other non media files?
So I think my context is not where your shortcuts are intended to work in?

You did not read the notes well enough. Try again.

Mouse on the ***progress bar***:

Code: Select all

Ctrl+Left Mouse Down Set start of sub loop.
Ctrl+Right Mouse Down Set end of sub loop.
        Ctrl+Alt+Mouse Down Reset sub loop.
(Sorry, I erroneously deleted your last post  )

I'm totally confused now....which progress bar are you talking about? Maybe it's something I'm not aware of?
I only know the one in the Info Panel/Preview tab but as I said in my post you accidentally deleted, I had tried that so...

Yes, that's exactly what I'd said...the Info Panel/Preview tab...those shortcuts do nothing for me? :?:
And you don't have no other setting enabled that might make the difference?

Hmm, scratching my head... :? ... this cannot not work. :)

Anyway, I looping my samples via "Play Again" and there is no notable delay. Might depend on the soundcard maybe?

Ooook got it, finally! So, it was working but you only notice that it has marked a new beginning after it finishes playing the current pass.
Anyway, so, back to your initial question...if I understood you correctly, you wanted me to test if I shortened the length (like cutting in half a 2 bar loop), if I could then get a perfectly smooth loop going...correct? (and then what if it did work?)

Well, it's impossible for me to test that because the loop points have to be done on the fly which is extremely hit & miss and would take forever (if ever). And also there is no visual of the wave to show me where a kick or a snare hit comes in to be able to make very precise loop points.

Can you estimate the length of that delay?

I measured it at exactly 300ms. Hope that helps!

Wow! Amazing, this fast...a big BIG thanks...I'll try it out now! :D

Hem...where is that new version? In the download section it says 21.60.0100

EDIT: Maybe I misunderstood, you mean to say when you release it, not that you just released it this instant...just for me!
