Sorry for the late reply.

Custom folder icons should certainly work. Ensure that this is unticked:
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | Use generic icons for super-fast browsing

It works here. When you define a custom folder icon in that way a file called "desktop.ini" is created in the folder. This file contains the reference to the icon. See the screenshot. As you see the folder has the desired icon.

I think you might have used the wrong link in your original post which confused the issue, maybe you meant to use this instead, anyway that is a non-standard windows hack, so it's not surprising that XY doesn't read those registry entries. What you want to do is possible in XY via CFI though, just make sure this is still in its default enabled state:

Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | Enable custom file icons

and then open Tools | Custom File Icons and create an entry like the one shown in example #3 on this page: https://www.xyplorer.com/release_12.40.php#CFI which would be something like this: *\>c:\icons\folder.ico (ie. don't include the square brackets notes, and change the path to the icon to match the same one you set in the registry)

PS: Scrollbars width can be reduced OS wide like this if of any interest: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/798 ... -10-a.html

@Don: If you read this, the CFI shortcut key could do with updating on that page from Ctrl+I to the new Shift+Alt+F9

Thanks for the clarification, Jupe.

I'd assume that hack would work also for 32-bit apps if it is applied to the appropriate key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons
instead of or additional to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

Ah yes, will update that CFI shortcut key.

It's two steps in the menu bar: Tools > Customize File Icons...
Plus there's an info button on the opened dialog that shows examples for multiple use cases.
More accessible how?
