Through the per-folder addition of a ".ixy" file that can additionally be used to add other folder-specific customisations. Plain text would be nice, but for performance reasons something binary would probably be better. (Which leads to the obvious next suggestion: an .xyt to .xyi compiler/translator...)
As for the why? Well backups and other transfers don't always go from K:\L\M to P:\L\M, but might very well go to X:\YYYY-MM-DD\L\M, and endlessly adding multiple patterns via the "Edit Folder View" dialogue (unless there is some better method) is kind of tedious, and requires copying all XY .ini and .dat files to another system, where the backups might subsequently be accessed.
