Ideas for Improving File Management

Post by ag346 »

I've been using xyplorer for some time now but I have never been able to customize it to the point where I have a one-stop shop for file management tasks. Here are a few examples of typical scenarios along with potential solutions:

Archiving my snail mail and other paper documents requires having to go from one program to the next in order to scan, edit metadata, tag, organize into folders, run deduplication, compress, and if stored on a network share, view while offline (such as with windows offline files). It seems that XYPlorer should have an easy way to do what PDFKeeper does, and that program is open source. XYPlorer would ideally be able to do the same with other file types such as downloaded software installers. These files often have useful meta data such as product version, support page, etc. and you could keep different versions well organized along with your own notes/comments/rating, license key/file. Also, PDF-XChange Viewer and Sumatra PDF Viewer are no longer being maintained and probably not work recommending (https://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=PDFthumbs). Instead, the adobe ifilter v11 can be installed for free and users can follow this guide on how to tweak the windows 10 registry if necessary - https://www.noggle.online/knowledgebase ... windows10/. As far as the scanning portion goes, here's a decent open source option - https://www.naps2.com/.

There are some useful features in available in windows explorer that are either not available in xyplorer or very difficult to get to. For example, compressed/encrypted folders and offline files. Lastly, the tagging feature would be better to use if you could limit them to certain folders only.

That said, I think this is a great application, I'm just not very good a scripting/coding so trying to figure out how tweak things myself isn't really an option. Hopefully, enough other people out there have the same interest in these features.
