In other words I wanted to start the song somewhere in the middle, and listen to it without holding the mouse button down. And it worked well. Great!
Wow, did not even think of that! Cool!

So here we have another analogy to the image MDBU where you can right-mouse-down-and-move and then release and it stays up.

Yes, seriously. Both files also seem to have the same audio specs and ID3 tagging. I wonder what makes the difference on your system. Maybe it does not like the singer. AI is coming, brother...

Specs = yes, tagging = no. The working song is "Adele - Someone like you"
and the non working is" Lena - Stardust". They have complete different ID3 tags though...

Yes, the tags are different but it's the same tagging system: both use ID3v2 only, not ID3v1.

And both don't use VBR.

One is working, the other one not ("playing failed: Automatisierungsfehler" in the status line)

Don's Biest, K-Lite resp. separate LAV should do - but reluctant with codecs packs (experiences) & always looking for somewhat portable solutions i went (bragging here about preview failing on most of my purchased mp3s some time ago) for two parser filters @ free-codecs.com that didn't fail me on any non-conform file since then. There's even a CTB on my toolbar that just regs/unregs the Biest.
So i can jump from a friends' XP to my win7 to my girlfriends' win10 and back without any hassle.
Home is where my XY is.
DS-MP3 Source Filter http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DS_ ... Filter.htm
MP3 Parser DirectShow Filter http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MP3 ... Filter.htm
both flagged as obsolete - presumably because of K-Lite and things
both installers uniextractable (containig even the reg/unreg BATs)

I use some applications that use bass.dll:
http://www.un4seen.com/
Quite an affordable, built in, deep and versatile solution...

Cheers,

Tom

P.S. On the bass.dll page there were two surround test files in .ogg and .wma, .ogg works for me with surround, .wma doesn't.

@Linkaday
MP3 Parser DirectShow Filter
Thanks, after registering the .ax component all those .mp3 files that couldn't be played via mdbu are now working fine

DS-MP3 Source Filter
isn't necessary on this system

Don, the progress bar within the status bar is absolutely fantastic. I was going to request this very thing and you beat me to it. Outstanding! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Yes, really great. Just the scrubbing could use a bit of smoothing so it's more "rubberband"-like - instead of hard scrolling more like playing faster forward or backward the further the mouse is moved away from the centre. ATM it's quite rough for me and often it seems to hang somehow, so that instead of going forward when I move my mouse or wacom pen to the right, it sticks to a certain moment in time repeating it very fast and sounds rather weird.

Cheers,

Tom

Moving the mouse is not like scrubbing in the old sense, but positioning-while-playing.

And yes, I can get the harsh effect you describe on very short files. Improvement is coming...

how can i exclude video files from audio-preview? at least for now, i get used to have MDBU on video files with getting picture, but with new feature videos react with sound instead.
