Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
Hey Don, what about turning those planned features in the roadmap green during 2016?
As you confirmed a while ago, the code is already there, it's just a matter of defining the behaviour under certain circumstances...

Just a little note to keep up your spirits: The Live Filter feature is now completely "thought through". Will definitely happen this year, maybe even before summer.

Re: Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
The type-ahead and the advanced search features work great at filling their particular niches, so if you're adding a quick search bar, I hope you're planning to make it filter the current view by default and not search recursively like Windows File Explorer does.
Re: Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
just for personal understanding: live filter in flat view will work just as a recursive search, am i right?(as everything is already in view)

Yes, it will work just like Visual Filter, only live.

Re: Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
My plan is to add the (optional) Live Filter Box to the left end of the Status Bar. So all current SB data will have to be moved about 150 pixels to the right to make space for the LFB.
This is also the position of other LFBs in XY, e.g. in "Help | List All Commands...".
However, in File Explorer a comparable box is located to the right of the Address Bar (more or less the opposite position of my plans). This ain't a bad place either since there is usually lots of unused screen space in this place. Disadvantage: it's far from the list, and depending on the window layout, can be totally disconnected of the filtered list.
So, what do YOU think? Where should the LFB go?

Re: Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
can LFB have different layout positions? 'cause all of us have different screen size and as XY always was friendly for small notebooks i'd wish to keep it(as i myself use 12" 1366x769 often). to put it in status bar is a good solution for large resolutions with lots of spare space but not as good for cases like mine. so the main question is if LFB must be stationed in one place only.
btw to put it next to AB may be a variant too. but as LFB wouldn't be always in view(or will it?) adding a popup box appearing in the right top/bottom corner of List could be a solution. why right corners? 'csuse this way popup will not cover any files in view in most situations. if make it just with icon and quite small border(say 2px) it will be thin and elegant as breadcrumb bar.
again, i'd prefer LFB to have few variants of positioning.

Re: Live Filter for List & Quick Search Bar
I cycle the AB into view on the left side of the Toolbar when needed. So if you went with the LFB on the right side of the Address Bar and a user doesn't normally the Address Bar visible at all times, the AB would have to be cycled ON to see / use the LFB? Is that a correct assumption? Personally if that's the case I think I'd prefer he left side of Status Bar. Only because, I would assume more people would "normally" have the Status Bar activated by default than the Address Bar. But, I'm going to welcome whatever you end up doing.
