Search in multiple PDFs?

Post by coolai »

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if XYplorer is capable of indexing and full-text-searching through multiple PDFs across several folders?

If not, can you recommend a non-cloud-software for that?

Thank you!

Indexing? No.

And as long as you have a .pdf preview handler installed (which should not be Adobes...):

Name & Location tab
Name: *.pdf
Location: Enter your folders here separated by | or a ;

and use the Contents tab for what you're searching inside of them...

I guess you don't mean .pdf preview handler
but rather a search filter (.pdf iFilter), SumatraPDF for example.

Why do you need it natively ?
iFilter for many formats are standard in todays Windows systems.
For PDFs most users have some type of PDF viewing software installed
which typically also installs an iFilter for the PDF format.

Well because I am looking for a software that allows me to search (and index, if needed) my PDFs over several folders and subfolders, without resorting to a full blown CMS.

So I thought maybe XYplorer already does that.

Under a Windows 10 20H2 x64 with
Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | [x] Use 64-bit IFilters for content search

it does it "natively". Seems that OS version it has an inbuilt iFilter for it...

It looks like. It's a fresh installation with nothing on it and after activating the 64-bit stuff XY finds the content in a pdf file...

That's cool, I activated it. Though forgive me for asking, but I never really understood the search method in XY.

Do I just have to CTRL+F in the folder I want to search, and then enter the searchword in the "Name" field?

Makes sense!

Tried it out, just searching in one folder with two PDFs, doesn't find the content. How do I know the filter is working? Does it work with your files?

Show a screenshot of Configuration - Other - Shell Integration

And of course it works here, otherwise I wouldn't have stated that...

I think I did tick the right boxes, and I'm searching content, yet somehow it doesn't find the content, when I open the PDF manually and CTRL+F in Adobe it finds it right away... Maybe something is wrong with the iFilters? I'm on Win 10 of course, and recently hat to install PDFlib iFilter.
