xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
So this has been happening to me for a while now, and even happens after a fresh re-format.
I use the no-install version of Xyplorer and set it to be the default file manager. [I keep it on the OS drive [C:\Port], I use the no-install version because I sync the Port folder on my workstation to my USB when I need to use my laptop, that way I can use all my portable programs on my laptop without suffering USB I/O speeds on the workstation .]
Some times when I open a folder on my workstation, the entire desktop will freeze up / lockup until after I close the Xyplorer window that was opened.
Dose anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
It only happens when Xyplorer is opened from the desktop, and the system otherwise has no other issues.
If I disable Xyplorer and go back to windows explorer there are no freezes/lock ups.

That XY instance never gets comes back from this state, even after waiting for a few minutes?
What does that mean, starting it from a command prompt doesn't lead to this behavior? It only happens when Xyplorer is opened from the desktop

No the desktop stays frozen until I close the XY window no matter how long it is open.
It dose not happen If it is opened from the taskbar, start menu, or a windows explore window such as the, "This PC" folder which always opens as windows explore first. What does that mean, starting it from a command prompt doesn't lead to this behavior? It only happens when Xyplorer is opened from the desktop
It only happens when I open a folder on the desktop with XY.

Re: xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
So you double-click a shortcut (*.LNK) to XYplorer when that happens?

Nope, Xy isn't frozen and nothing else is affected besides the user desktop.admin wrote: ↑24 Nov 2020 17:38 XYplorer itself is not frozen, right? When you do Help | Various Information, what is shown for these values?Code: Select all

Looks normal.
Does it also happen when you open the folder by keyboard ENTER instead of double-click?

Re: xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
Which version (build) of Win10 is that?
Are you using any kind of skin or other desktop enhancement?

Re: xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
It's standard up-to-date windows 10 pro non-insider built 20H2/2009
Skin wise I don't use anything fancy, gave up on all that years ago. Just the normal built in dark theme.
Over all I use a very boring and out of the box system setup now days.
Outside of Xy that is, since even though Xy causes the random desktop freezing issue, it's still well worth it not to have to deal with the windows file manager. XD

OS: Windows 10 Professional, 64-bit, Release 2004, Build 19041.630
Tested it with above Windows: nope, does not freeze here.

Re: xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
It's very inconstant some times it happens a few times in a day, other times I'll go weeks without it happening.
Which is why I was wondering if anyone could think of any reason it could be happening.
Some setting in windows, some setting in XY that could cause it randomly... My system is otherwise rock solid stability wise and XY is the only thing that causes a random issue...
What dose XY do when it's set to the default file manager integration?
Like what registery key or file dose it alter and how?
Re: xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
To remove any traces of XYplorer's shell integration:
Close XYplorer
Open a command prompt with admin permissions and execute all of these lines
If some fail, that's fine
Afterwards start XYplorer again, and redo your settings for the shell integration

Re: xyplorer Freezes the windows 10 desktop
After a long time I finally figured out the chain of events that causes xyplorer to freeze the desktop.
It's when I right click a shortcut > Open folder location
Every time I do that the desktop will temporarily freeze up and I won't be able to click anything on the desktop but everything else will work fine.
Of course I now use Windows 11 instead of windows 10 unlike the thread title.
Hopefully other people can reproduce this now and it can finally be fixed. It's an issue that's followed me around 4 different computers and 2 major versions of windows now. XD
