Sort By Length

I was trying to use the Sort By column to choose "Len." It only seems to work if I first turn on the column to show "Len," then I can either choose the "Len" column or right-click on the Sort By column (#) and get it to work. Is this normal, or should I always have to turn on the column first in order to use the sorting?

I have always had this work if I use the Sort By column (#) for "Type", even though I do not show that column in my List.

Correct. That's an anomaly that serves the purpose of making things faster.
