'double click on empty space goes up' - no longer works?

Hi,
I just upgraded to 20.50.0200. I don't know if this is related to this version or some of my settings simply got lost, but a behavior I use all the time doesn't work anymore double click on empty space goes up in hierarchy.
The appropricate option is turned on under settings/general/Menus, Mouse, Usability
If I double click in the space behind a file-name for instance, that file is opened externally or XYPlorer browses the folder of that line, if it was a folder. A single click selects the item, no matter where I click in the line.
I'm not sure what 'full name column select" now does, but toggling either state doesn't return the behavior I seek.
Maybe I'm mixing up some settings here as actually clicking on the white space below or right of the list still works. But 'in between clicking' did work before, used it all the time.
any ideas?
