So, v20.80.0103 does not fix it for you?

Sorry, I was a bit quick with my post, before testing the new beta.

v20.80.0103 brings back the preview on my system but still only the small version of it for both hover and MDBU.

Even more interesting, I just realized 103 was available, my prior comments were for 102. But - 103 did changed two things but ONLY with a group of PDF's for which MDBU was not working at all in 102. So I guess it's boiling down to PDF contents or PDF version.

So, for the group of PDF's with decode errors and no response to MDBU, using 103...

1. MDBU now works on those PDF's - BUT - only with a tiny preview. So, we're getting WARMER :?
2. Hover over name shows a small preview now instead of Can't Decode. Which probably explains why I get some response to MDBU now.

The other group of PDF's that worked fine with 102 work the same with 103. Filename hover preview and large MDBU preview.

Same build/version of PDF-XChange Editor as RalphM.

P.S. Examined a PDF that worked and one that would not. Same PDF version/producer/creator.
P.S.S Found a PDF "I" did not create, but the manual for the Yeti microphone. 1.6/Adobe PDF Library/Adobe InDesign. Just to rule out something weird with the various methods my PDF's have been produced in the past 10 years.

Could you send me one of the PDFs that don't work?

To me it looks like the PDF-XChange Editor has some problem that XY cannot fix.

If the free PDF-XChange Viewer is correctly installed the pdf preview size issue should disappear. And note that this is possible while the PDF-XChange Editor is installed as well. Probably the Viewer has to be installed after the Editor.

I was going to send it but could not find a way to attach here or send via PM.

Have the editor installed, installed the viewer, no change in behavior.

I had started out with the viewer, but then read the editor replaced it and seemed to have a nice feature set so I'm actually considering buying it.

<edit> but I did just notice that SOME of the ones that did not display the full size preview do that now. Randoms ones in that same folder still display the small preview. So weird.

Ok, how do I reset things. I uninstalled all the PDF tools and I still get thumbnails and large/small previews. Tried refresh thumbnails and wiping a bunch of files in logical folders inside appdata\local

Windows does some caching here. In each folder Windows creates a hidden file "thumbs.db". Find it (where your PDFs are) and delete it.

That's what's odd, I know about that file, and it's not there - in any folder. I deleted the other hidden files there that PaperPort creates just for good measure.

I went to check for this file as well and couldn't find it in any of the folders I have the small previews in.

:oops: You are right. I should at least have looked into my own folders before posting: I don't have that file either. :| And worse: ATM I cannot find any way to have this Thumbs.db file created by Windows. Did they stop this technology? :eh:

Anyway, I will try to recreate the MDBU preview now on my machine by installing the newest PDF-XChange Editor and then see if I can fix it (or if they should fix it :) )...

FYI, I now uninstalled all PDF-viewing software and still have the thumbnail preview used for Hover Box and MDBU! So there is some caching going on, and I have no idea where it is located. The cache even deals with renamed files, impressive. However, when you make a copy of a file, that copy will not be in the cache. So there's a way to get a fresh testing setup bypassing the cache.

OK, I now installed PDF-XChange Editor 8.0.336.0 and can confirm that the previews and thumbnails are limited to a tiny 256x256 box, i.e. they are too small to be useful. Furthermore there is no multipage preview anymore at all. I'm not sure if that is a limitation of the Free Version (did not find any info on their website). At the moment it means that PDF-XChange cannot be recommended anymore as a PDF viewer. After 10 years. Pity.

Here some info for completeness (and before uninstalling it again):

Code: Select all

text get("previewhandler", "pdf");
  GUID: {9B68BDF7-95F9-4A1F-851C-27D822F8E3E9}
  DefaultName: PDF-XChange Preview Handler
  DisplayName: PDF-XChange Preview Handler

text get("thumbnailprovider", "pdf");
  GUID: {644D29FB-8692-49A6-B37D-D11A4CCC7A6D}
  DefaultName: PDF-XChange PDF Thumbnail Handler

OK, uninstalled PDF-XChange Editor 8.0.336.0.

Reinstalled the free PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.315.0, and all is fine again. Large previews, multi-page previews, large thumbnails.
On https://www.tracker-software.com/produc ... scontinued you get the "Latest Stable Release: 2.5.322.10". I did not test this but I assume it works like 2.5.315.0. There is also a list with previous releases: https://www.tracker-software.com/versio ... nge-viewer Get it while you can!
