How to use live filter and highlight matches?

Post by abdulk »

I have "Highlight matches" and "Redirect typing to Live Filter Box" enabled, but the search term is not highlighted in results (see screenshot). Thanks!

That's because you have "Redirect typing to Live Filter Box" enabled

What would be the sense to highlight matches when only matches appear in the list anyway...

Hello, sorry for the late reply. I didn't receive a notification.

The use case is this: let's say my filter returns 100 files and want to see WHERE in the filename my search string resides. Is it in the beginning, end? I don't believe filtering matches and highlighting the filter mask are mutually exclusive.

Not in theory, but in reality they currentl are mutually exclusive. Live Filter does not do any highlighting, and with "Redirect typing to Live Filter Box" enabled you are using the Live Filter, not the Type Ahead Find.

So the question is: Should I add an option "Highlight matches" also to Live Filter?

There is a use case, so the answer is probably yes

Me too. I might just leave it as it is. No option, no checkbox.

Or add it to Visual Filter as well??? And, since LFB honors "Ignore diacritics" and "Match case" settings from Visual Filters, we could add an "Highlight matches" option directly to Visual Filters...

UPDATE: ah, no! VF is far too complex for highlighting... forget that.

Later this can be made optional
please, make this optional because highlight doesn't work well with Arabic and Persian language

Oh yes, confirmed. That's tough to fix. I will add the "Highlight matches" option.

It's a nice fine tuner.
One thought for even finer tuning:
Maybe others have a different view, but I automatically expect the settings in "Conficuration..." to be rock solid (permanent) "default" or "starting" values and not to be changed by a normal function in the UI. Probably exceptions can be found, but in the context of highlighting the live filter string it feels wrong for the filter box in the UI to change the setting in the config. Config should be permanent. Changing the option in the live filter box UI should be temporary. Otherwise, why have this check box in the config anyway?

Well, I see what you mean, but I see it as a shortcut. Two ways leading to the same goal is a natural experience in everyday life, so it's not too far out conceptually. And XY has such shortcuts all over the place.

i like new Live Filter Highlight but it's has some glitches.
1. while in Thumbs view some items matching live filter aren't highlighted.

2. if typing quite fast Live Filter seem to "take it slow" sometimes = box contains filter word but in List match is made only by 1-2 first letters of filtering word. can't determine some exact reasons, maybe Thumbs view and big amount of items in list involved. "Delay before filter" is 0.

1. Indeed, this works so bad, I will just stop highlighting in multi-line captions.
2. Yes, there might be a race condition. Cannot do much at the moment.
