When in "Live filter box", how to prevent back key to navigate folders?
Hi,
As showed in this screen-recording (https://goo.gl/rQs430), when I'm cleaning characteres in "Live filter box" by using back key, and there is no more characteres, the backkey navigate folder level up.
Is it possible to prevent back key to navigate folders when focus is in "Live filter box"?
Thanks for assistance!
Carlos

Re: When in "Live filter box", how to prevent back key to navigate folders?
Well, that is actually a feature. But I can see that it might not be wanted by everybody.#
So, here is a question to everybody:
Should the Back key work in the empty LFB to go up (Back) or down (Shift+Back)?
(And no, I won't make it optional. I want a decision.)

I'm confused.
Why are you asking that specific question Don?
Especially since the OP is asking about a third option: go nowhere.

I think the only question Don is asking is: Should the Back key work in the empty LFB to browse folders? (using Back to go up or Shift+Back to go down)
My answer would be no: when in a textbox, the Back key should only delete text.
I see the problem raised here. You caret being at the end of the text currently in the LFB: if you want to remove all text, you're tempted to hit the Back key and press it down until all text has been cleared. If you let the key down an extra nano-second, the list will go up.

The question confused me as well. I have my backspace key assigned to "back" not the default of "up". So, I wasn't experiencing what cadu showed in the video.

Re: When in "Live filter box", how to prevent back key to navigate folders?
Okay, my question was apparently confusing.
When I asked:
"Should the Back key work in the empty LFB to go up (Back) or down (Shift+Back)?"
I meant to ask:
"Should the Back key work in the empty LFB, i.e. go up (Back) and down (Shift+Back)?
I take it the dominant opinion is NO.
Thanks, will change it.

Maybe, but it's not my opinion.admin wrote:I take it the dominant opinion is NO.
As long as Enter navigates into a folder then there needs to be a way to get back out of the folder. Without such the feature is unbalanced and tends towards chaos.
The issues I had with the backspace in empty LFB behavior was that it was too easy to:
1) Trigger when only attempting to clear what I had typed.
2) Trigger multiple times and completely overshoot where I wanted to be.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how this should be solved.
Since Enter has been given special meaning, perhaps rather than tamper with Backspace's standard meaning, Shift+Enter should go back?
Take it a step further and maybe it should only go back to the point where this filtering began?

I see your point. But I don't see a good solution. (Don't like the Shift+Enter idea; this would just be another extra rule / exception on top of the mess.)
Waiting for inspiration...

I think this is an important point. Either both (Enter and Back) or none. I tend to say "both".TheQwerty wrote:As long as Enter navigates into a folder then there needs to be a way to get back out of the folder. Without such the feature is unbalanced and tends towards chaos.

No, it is allowed when the box is empty. See discussion above.

Re: When in "Live filter box", how to prevent back key to navigate folders?
I personally find it annoying too. Now I just force myself to be extra careful when backspacing in the LFB. The 'navigate up' just feels out of place in a box which is supposed to filter the current view.
I usually type in a filter, not find what I'm looking for, press backspace while thinking of the right filter... then look back and see that I'm at 'This PC' instead of where I was.
So, personally I'd prefer removing the 'navigate up' (if you won't make it an option).
Also, can't a press+hold backspace stop when the box is empty. Then, to navigate up, you press backspace again? It's usually the press+hold repeated backspace that causes the issue.
