FVS and DVS and WTF oh my

Post by JLoftus »

I'm sure this is a user error, but I'm baffled, hoping someone can help me to understand what is and/or is not happening with Folder View Settings and Default View Settings.

I am sure this was all working just fine for a long time, but it seems for the past few weeks, it's all just *not*.

I have a folder tree with media, for which the root I wish one view, and all subfolders, including new ones, to have a different, fixed view. I posted this back in February, and Sammy Sarkar's answer has been working for me since:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15507

But, what seems to be happening now, despite removing all defined FVS and the DFS, and even deleting the fvs.dat file, is that no matter what I do, when I apply a view setting to a folder (the root media folder for example), this seems to become the default, and all folders take on this view. Then, when I "fix" it up, and set what I wish to be the default, and choose "Define this Folder View as Default", that steps on my media folder's view, and it loses its setting. Worse, when I close that tab, open a new one, and navigate to the media folder, yes, its view is correct, but then all the other folders now take on that view.

It seems like the FVS/DFS view paradigm is broken, but, I am sure if that were the case, others would have been posting about it already.

Can someone please give me a short and simple "here's what you're doing wrong, dummy" guess as to what's happening?

Thanks

Jeff

So, it's been several weeks and no replies, and the more I work with this, the more I'm starting to think it's become broken since some versions back.

I've deleted fvs.dat and recreated everything several times. I'd really appreciate it if someone can try the following and see if it can be reproduced:

This appears to be irrespective of whether you are in dual pane view or not.

With several tabs open, in one tab, define some folder view settings as default. Then define some folder view C:\foo\bar (no subs) with all default settings checked. look over at the other tabs and they are now looking like what you just defined. Choose "Restore Folder View" and the default settings are indeed restored, but to ALL tabs(!) including the C:\foo\bar tab which was supposed to have its own settings!

Please test the above and tell your results.

Thank you

Have a look at these settings:
Configuration | Styles | Apply list styles globally
Configuration | Styles | Remember list settings per tab

Maybe you inadvertently changed them.

I was so hopeful when I saw the "apply list styles globally" option was ticked. Alas, this problem persists. I have ensured both of these two options are not checked, saved settings, even restarted XY to be sure.

I saved yet another new FVS, and as soon as I do, all tabs in that pane are immediately set to this new FVS. Default does not "stick", nor do any FVS for an open tab with one defined. If I select a tab which does have an FVS defined, and choose "Restore Folder View", indeed that specific FVS is recalled, but, it is then applied to all open tabs in that pane. The other pane is not affected, but, exhibits the same bug if these steps are repeated in that pane.

Another test I just tried, is that I closed a tab with an FVS defined, then opened a new tab and navigated to that directory, the FVS was loaded, and also unfortunately then applied to all other tabs in that pane.

Don, are you confirming that if you have several tabs open in one pane, at least two with specific FVS defined, that you cannot reproduce this issue? Anyone else?

I haven't tried it (yet). Can you confirm that it also happens with a fresh instance (and the current beta)?

Thanks @highend! I had not thought to try a fresh install of the new beta, and YES it is happening!

I renamed my XY folder, and unzipped the latest beta. Continuing with "Trial", I set up a few tabs in one pane, and set a FVS for one of them, and chose "Save Folder Settings" All the other tabs then had this view.

Can anyone confirm my [in]sanity?

Mh,

when I use a fresh instance and remove e.g. the "ext" column all other tabs change in the same way. Even if
Configuration | Styles | Apply list styles globally
is off.

Is that the way it's supposed to work?

This appears consistent with the behavior I am seeing, and I am pretty sure it's a bug. I think it started happening about a month or two ago.

There is no bug here. The Apply list styles function is related to the Customize List options. If you want to remove ext column on one tab only, you should click Remember list settings per tab/Apply to/Column layout

Indeed, This does set the behavior as I was intending. Thank you!

Yes, on 20160525 I removed the factory default ticks from these two in Configuration | Styles | Remember list settings per tab:
- Column layout (positions, widths, visibility)
- List style (line numbers, auto-size, grid...)

Reason: Users were often confused that column layout and styles did not propagate thru tabs.

Now you were confused by the opposite. Hmmm. Difficult.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, I was sure the behavior had been to my liking for some time, and that I'd not made any configuration changes to cause the behavior to change, this explains - I didn't, the defaults changed.

Thanks again to all for helping sort it out.

Maybe an visual indicator for the style-per-tab mode could help?

Yes. Or some info about the background in one place. For example on the column # tooltip.

FVS: active (name)|active (default)|no
List style: global|per pane|per tab
Column layout: per pane|per tab
and so on.

EDIT: or I am not sure. I think I am pretty familiar with the way of working so I don't know what could really help here.

EDIT2: What I would really do is that I would grey out the "Remember list settings per tab/Apply to/List styles" option when the "Apply list styles globally" is ON.

They are independent from each other. One is about applying a style, the other about remembering a style (or other things).
