Turn off 'Show folder sizes' for paticular directory

Post by iycgtptyarvg »

I just discovered the 'Folder view settings' feature and am very happy to use it.
But, how can I make it apply to the 'Show folder sizes' feature?

My situation:
I always have 'Show folder sizes' on (Tools/Configuration/General/Tree and List/List/Show folder sizes).
Unfortunately, my C:\ directory (system drive) is difficult to access because it constantly updates and so XYplorer is constantly recalculating the sizes.
This makes accessing the directory a bad experience.

I would like to turn 'Show folder sizes' off for ONLY the root C:\ directory.
Can it be done?

It cannot be done. 'Show folder sizes' is not in the scope of Folder View Settings.

Well, the idea makes sense. I might add it in a later version.

That would be wonderful.

Thanks for the quick response.

That's something I could use myself (only the other way round) :)

Generally I don't turn it off but for a few specific folders it's nice to always have it on, so, great to hear!

Yep, that's a good idea! My backup folders are huge anyway, don't need additional long-running calculations to indicate the obvious.

cheers,

This is perhaps the most useful feature I miss greater usage due to its agressiveness in its current state. If I turn it on for a folder it generally means I have need for it on that specific folder period. No need to scan everything I do on the other tabs just to rescan when I go back to the original place which is (excuse me here) annoying).

I tried a 'cached folder size' script a while back which uses CC with non-satisfactory results.

Hopefully I'm not getting off-topic here too much, but I'd probably use folder-specific trigger settings for Custom Columns, if they were a thing.... I have a mixed CC that includes number-of-pages for pdfs. I have a couple of folders with huge tech books though, and they take forever to calculate. (And I don't have enough sense to just press Esc.)

I'm currently experimenting with adding it to the List Style (Tools | Customize List | - submenu -). This would make it available to FVS out of the box. Seems to work nicely. I just wonder which I should add:
- "Show Folder Sizes"
OR
- "Skip Showing Folder Sizes"
?

Probably the first. For performance reasons I would like to activate only where necessary.

Well, please allow both directions. I created this point explicitly for the purpose of NOT doing it for every directory because of the long wait!

Shouldn't this automatically work out-of-the-box?
I presume with FVS you explicitly store the settings the user has set. So, whether someone has 'Always show folder sizes' in the settings on or off doesn't matter. FVS only looks at the state when the user saved the FVS setting.

Or doesn't it work like that?

Well, it's because of the long wait that I'm with highend here:

I have it on permanently. Why else have the option in the settings?
With SSDs its very fast. Also, the directory structure is cached so the next time I enter the directory it's very fast anyway.
The reason the C:\ doesn't work properly is because Windows is constantly updating the system dirs. Therefore, XYplorer keeps restarting the calculations and stalling the program.

Major bummer. I ask for something and the OPPOSITE gets implemented.
