I've used Nir Sofer's IconExtract on W7-64 c:\windows (and all subdirectories)
47,094 extracted icons, 1.3Gb of space.
Then I ran CloneSpy, to weed out the duplicates (WTF? M$ stores some icons more than once?) and guess what, I was left with the grand total of 3,777 files, just over 8% and totalling just 112Mb, and even these 3,777 seem to be far from unique, e.g. what's the actual difference between
imageres_3_109.ico
netcenter_3_6.ico
other than a small difference in size?
And hell, there are still no nice icons for my user buttons.

For the icons that look the same, maybe this could be of interest:

If you are looking for icons, you may also try this website:

I'm not really impressed with system icons myself.
