Show folder size on demand

Post by JDługosz »

I remember a feature where "show folder size" could not actually do the heavy lifting until you asked. The size cell showed "press (something) to compute size"

Now I can't find it. Am I thinking of someone else?

(BTW, can't search for it either in the forum, as it says "ignoring 'folder'" and returns all occurrences of the word size in all posts.

Do you mean by hitting Shift + F5?

Or:
Menu - Help - List All Commands

Type: size
286 | Calculate Folder Sizes (the assigned shortcut)

And before doing any of those manual triggers highend suggested, you may want to disable "show folder size" under config > tree and list

So it does work that way always, it's just not showing the indicator in the Size column anymore?
Yes, so it does.

My preferred solution is to Enable but not for Network.

Folder size is important. Ok, it may take some time to calculate, however indexing would help.

One of my reasons to stick with xplorer2 is their easy way to display folder sizes - on demand, of course (CTRL-D).

I suggest you reconsider this topic.

Thanks and regards,

It calculates them or adds a column that shows them?

The column for file sizes that is selected for display usually, shows by default for folders "<folder>". After hitting CTRL+D, it starts calculating all the folder sizes in the pane, and replaces the previous "<folder>" by that folder's size, line after line, top-down. Very convenient. The process can be interrupted at any typ by "esc".

Can't see your problem...

Menu - Tools - Configuration... - General - Tree and List - List - Always show folder sizes
It seems you have turned that on?

Turn it off, and whenever you need to show folder sizes,
use Shift + F5 or Menu - View - Calculate Folder Sizes

I might be talking to robots but as highend already said: Shift + F5 is the way.
