XY with WINE on Linux... anybody tried it?
XY with WINE on Linux... anybody tried it?
Not much to add to the title. I suspect that XY is quite tied to Windows to be able to run optimally on WINE too. But I'd like to know if anybody actually tried to do so...

Re: XY with WINE on Linux... anybody tried it?
Not exactly, but I've tried unsuccessfully a few times on OS X with both WineBottler and CrossOver.
No luck at all but to be fair I really had no clue what I was doing and couldn't figure out how to proceed with debugging it to move forward.
I recall that others have tried, or at least mentioned it in the forums, not sure about their success though.
EDIT:
After doing some searching...
Serendipity seemed to have some success, as did John Bee, but both were many years ago and not without problems. Maybe we'll be lucky and they'll chime in?
A user mailed Don about it working in SUSE but that was presumably in a VM of Windows in VirtualBox.

Re: XY with WINE on Linux... anybody tried it?
I did use XY on Ubuntu several years ago out of curiosity. It worked for the most part, I could navigate and do searches but it was giving errors sometimes which Don narrowed it down to "short time" format. Haven't tried after that.
I had good success with several windows programs using wine, which seems to be actively developed here: https://winehq.org/download/
I am curious to trial their product Crossover. Maybe next year.
Update: OK, I am now really really curious after seeing xplorer2 works on crossover. List of apps known to work:

The "short time" issue is long fixed, so it should work.

I have not tried this in many years. I don't even have wine installed anymore as I have gone to Linux fully.Marco wrote:Not much to add to the title. I suspect that XY is quite tied to Windows to be able to run optimally on WINE too. But I'd like to know if anybody actually tried to do so...

But you're really missing having such a powerful file manager, right?John Bee wrote:I have gone to Linux fully.
Thanks for at least stopping by again!

Yippeee still works!!!
Works except one error popping up at start up (see error code and video). After OK ing almost everything i tested worked fine.
Ofcourse, did not check extensively and with no planning, but here is a video (low res, sorry) of some quick tests and notes below the video on how to make it work. Again, wrote it in haste (going on vacation starting Friday). Good luck.

That error has to do with shell32 columns/properties. So you probably won't get any extended properties for files. Check the File Info Tips...

OK, any specific dll associated with it?admin wrote:That error has to do with shell32 columns/properties. So you probably won't get any extended properties for files. Check the File Info Tips...
Wine has some DLLs but they are not on by default, had to turn on few to make it work.

Well, this one: C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll
That should be there for sure, so I don't really understand the issue.

Re: XY with WINE on Linux... anybody tried it?
Well 13.60 definitely runs on Ubuntu 13.10
You need to install vb6run with winetricks and when it launches you get an error but after that all is working. Even scripting is working fine.

XY is obviously a Windows file manager but I have to say: There is absolutely NOTHING on unix that even comes within a thousand kilometers of XY when it comes to GUI file management. There's just nothing. Potential new market?
