Thumbs don't update without auto-rotate enabled

With XY 23.50.0210 on Windows x64. In Config I have "Auto-rotate Preview" and "Cache thumbnails on disk" disabled and "Auto-rotate thumbnails" disabled. I've tried with both "High Speed" and "Smooth" thumbs. I get the same results with a ::Fresh installation.

I need to always see what the real picture is, on the disk. That's why I have all auto-rotation turned off. But, unless I enable such rotation, Preview and thumbs don't update.

Isn't there a way to have Preview and Thumbs reflect the actual picture on disk, ignoring EXIF info? Or am I misunderstanding Auto-Rotate? I thought it meant "obey EXIF info" - maybe to give a prettier display (all pix artificially shown upright somehow). Does it in fact mean "show picture as stored"?

If Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Auto-rotate thumbnails is unticked then the thumbnails are shown as they are, disregarding any EXIF instructions.

But you have to manually update the cache to reflect this (View | Caches | Refresh Thumbnails). It does not happen automatically.

I'm baffled by this situation. I have caching disabled, and auto-rotate on both Preview and Thumbnails disabled (unticked).

Attached below as #2 is an original Pixel4a photo (same as #1 but reduced by 50% to meet attachment limits). Other apps including FastStone viewer, GIMP, XnView, an old Photoshop, and a very old JPG viewer, all set to have no auto-rotation per EXIF, also show it with mountains pointing down. BUT be aware that the forum browser viewer here apparently auto-rotates and shows mountains up - so you need to download the file.

#3 is the pic after rotating #2 to the "right" once, in XY. The CRC did change but the thumbnail didn't (after F5 too) and the other apps still show mountains down. Again don't trust the browser view here.

#4 screencap is just #1-3 as they appear in XY.

#7 screencap shows the preview of #3 as mountains rotated to the right.

MDBU on all three images shows mountains down, just like the thumbs.


Going purely by these symptoms, it looks like "rotate right" in XY somehow only rotated the Preview. I realize that doesn't make sense.

My earlier comment about "thumbnail not updating" was because I assumed XY had actually rotated the picture - before checking in other apps indicates that it really didn't.

I think you are talking about the "Rotate Left/Right" in the context menu, which is a Windows shell cmd (not XY), also I am pretty sure (untested) for jpg just performs a exif rotate in Windows 10 (Win7 I think pixel rotate from memory), so if you don't have Auto-Rotate enabled in XY then the thumbnail will not update because there is no change, except to the exif info.

Well, that would explain it. It crossed my mind that Rotate left / right in the context menu might not be an XY feature but some check I ran made me think otherwise. Fooled again, and this has taken hours... But it's good to understand where the issue is and that it's not XY. Thanks!
