I know that Windows uses the 256x256 icon to render the 96x96 ones that are used for Large. I don't know anything beyond that.

Thanks for looking into it though.

In the next beta you will get 96x96 icons when the thumbnail size is >= 96 and < 128.

However, as you will see, the quality of the shrinking from Jumbo to 96 is bad! I don't know why it looks much better in File Explorer. There must be some trick. Compare XY left and FE right:

The ICO format seems to be able to contain 96x96 icons, https://axialis.com/tutorials/tutorial-vistaicons.html

Does not help. This is about the system image list.

Maybe the system uses the 128x128 resource, instead of the 256x256?

AFAIK there are only 4 resources: 16, 32, 48, 256

If you supply Windows 10 with a 128x128 icon, it will display at 48x48.

96x96 icons aren't generated unless the 256 size is contained in the source icon.

I'm not sure what the deal is either. There's another 3rd party explorer app that's able to scale them, but I don't know how they or MS does it.
