Closed most of the nodes in the Tree View. Opened WinRAR SFX (64-bit) and changed the "comments" again, and again, ... (w/o closing it). Attempted to access the executable, via launching it (the SFX) and XY generates, VB.Err=7. I'm not seeing an obvious memory leak from the peak working set, so depending on the structures causing the stack limit fault it appears to be sourced from some unwanted memory destruction which VB6 thinks should exist but doesn't and therefore it isn't getting garbage collected as well.

Code: Select all

Sub | Function <routine>
On Error Goto Handler
     <code>
     Exit <routine>
Handler:
     ' Critical not to generate error while processing the error with this model.
     ' Reporting can be extensive; line numbers (requires creativity or tool); output: file/dbms.
     ' Best handled with out of process exception handler.
     Err.Raise Err.Number, "(<routine>)->" & Err.Source, Err.Description
End <routine>

This evening after upgrading from 10.60 to 10.70.0100 my XYplorer is crashing a lot, it doesn't happen always but when it does it seems to do when right clicking a file and invoking the contextual menu (to pick two files to compare with Beyond Compare which I have installed). Unfortunately I can't understand if RAR files are more error prone (I have WinRAR installed too) or better, find a definitive pattern, sorry. OS is Windows 7 64 bit

Code: Select all

Edit: another thing which may or may not be related is that while the crashes occurred, a file was being downloaded by Firefox to that folder.

That's the kind of workflow that makes XYplorer crash on my laptop. I do have BC and WinRAR installed (Win7 x64).
I think I'll try disabling the BC shellext to try to troubleshoot any incompatibility between both programs' shellexts.

Contextual menu= frequently; Beyond Compare= haven't experienced yet, use all the time; W7-64= yes; Firefox= yes.
Frequency of crashes as increased significantly since the 10.60.000x (early releases).

Update
10.70.0100 (posted in the beta as .0002): Currently can generate a crash every 5 seconds. :shock:

Please download an older version from the freezer (http://www.xyplorer.com/lefreezer.php) to verify that this has really gone worse in 10.70 (which I do not believe).

I didn't notice it getting any better or worse with the last month(s) builds.
I tried with Beyond Compare shellext disabled, and crashes still happen (got one right now).

So this points to WinRAR once more. Which version of WinRAR should I install to reproduce the issue under Win7/64?

UPDATE: I installed WinRAR 4.01 German 32bit, and tried to crash XY for 10 minutes. No luck. No crash. :|

I really tried to do again everything I did as yesterday to get a crash, and I had only one in about half an hour of tries. Before the crash I saw the error message Run-time error '7': Out of memory exactly as in one of the reported screenshoots. But I can't find a reproducible pattern yet :cry:

Hi Don! Here a bit of additional information... I am a heavy user of both WinRar (latest Beta) and Beyond Compare under XP and w2k and never ever experienced a XY crash that I would bring in connection with these two. I am not using DnD with WinRar, but I am using DnD with BC (into BC). I am using the shell pop up menu with WinRar, but almost never with BC.

So, the problem might be connected to Win7 64 bit.

I managed to get three crashes in the last 10 minutes, what triggered the crash was the "Restart without Saving" function in XYplorer, before that, only selecting files and invoking the contextual menu without performing any action. But again unfortunately this behaviour is intermittent

I'm using WinRAR x64 v4.10 (latest beta).
Already got two more crashes today... I'm not really sure, but I think the crashes can be triggered even by displaying the context menu (without selecting any function).
As ale pointed out, this is difficult to replicate, as it happens often enough to be annoying, but sometimes only 2-3 time a day in an intermittent way.

@Borut: I am testing this on Win7 64 bit.

But you also installed the 32bit shell extensions of WinRAR? Otherwise WinRAR x64 can not interfere with XY (32bit) AFAIK.

WinRAR x64 installs both 64-bit and 32-bit shell extensions, AFAIK. I never saw any option to chose one or the other.
