File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWare
File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWare
Hello, thanks for keeping XYPlorer going strong really digging the new features. This is a problem that has plagued me for a couple of years since I first purchased my lifetime license. I decided to deal with it but it bothers me enough where I wanted to check in if you've tested either of these scenarios.
My Config:
Windows 7 x64
XYPlorer 9.10
I remember this happening to me under Vista as well. In short, I use a lot of VMWare guest OS's, and I also use Remote Desktop Connection (builtin Windows client) to remotely access my computers. The behavior is the same in both cases:
1. I can copy from XY to either RD or VMWare (that's good)
2. I cannot copy from either RD or VMWare back to XY (that's bad)
I have to open Windows Explorer everytime I want to copy files from a RD or VMWare, which of course ruins the idea of trying to stay inside of XY. Do you know how the underlying file copy operations are handled in those types of applications that would cause XY to behave like this?
BTW, the latest version of XY's "Background Bar" has given a little more insight into this. When you copy from a VM/RD and then paste into XY, the XY screen flickrs, and the status shows an error:
Completed 6:03 mins ago after less than 1 sec (Cancelled or Failed) Copy "C:\Users\chris\AppData\Lo...\StreamWriter-DoS.aspx" to C:\tmp Queued. Initiated: 5/6/2010 2:36:19 PM Started: 5/6/2010 2:36:21 PM Completed: 5/6/2010 2:36:21 PM

Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWare
How exactly do you (attempt to) copy the files? And what happens then, any error message (apart from that background bar item)?
Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWare
Inside the VM or Remote Desktop, I simply right click and Copy, or ctrl+c. Then switch over to XY and right-click paste, or ctrl+v. I'll call my primary computer the 'host' and any VM session or Remote Desktop session the 'guest' since i'm talking about copying files from a guest to the host.
I don't normally get error messages, but this morning, probably since you asked and XY listened, I'm getting some different behavior and errors. This morning I started up a Remote Desktop session, inside the RD, I copied a single HTML file from the guest. It actually copied over to my host XY when I pasted it. After that, I tried copying another file, a ZIP, an EXE, and a text file. None of them would copy to my host XY. They do copy fine to my host's Windows Explorer.
After some tries, I managed to get a couple error messages out of XY:
Error 9 (00000009)
Desc Subscript out of range
Dll 0
Proc SaveAttachment
Source XYplorer
XY ver 9.10.0000
OS Windows 7
Date 5/7/2010 9:53:51 AM
Error 445 (000001BD)
Desc Object doesn't support this action
Dll 0
Proc SaveAttachment
Source XYplorer
XY ver 9.10.0000
OS Windows 7
Date 5/7/2010 9:56:52 AM
Is that helpful? Can anyone reproduce this? I've had this issue for two years, across a few OS re-installs (I refresh my host OS regularly).

Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWare
I wonder if this is related... Trying to drag and drop a file from the desktop of an XP SP3 VM in MS VPC to the list view, results in a hidden folder being created named "DragonDropProcessFolder". The actual file is not copied.
XY doesn't throw an errr, but VPC does:

Code: Select all
Virtual PC has encountered an error on the host while copying files.
An error in Virtual PC has occurred (d3).
Used to update to the latest beta every day. Now I have children instead…

Just to make sure: DragonDropProcessFolder is not created by XY.lukescammell wrote:I wonder if this is related... Are you saying this is a new error this morning, or that you are getting this for two years?bugger wrote:Inside the VM or Remote Desktop, I simply right click and Copy, or ctrl+c. Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWare
Oh I was saying the error message was new to me, I hadn't every seen XY pop up that error before. The general problem of copying/pasting between VMWare and Remote Desktop has persisted for two years.
Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWar
Any news on this issue?
Copying files from a vmware guest (tried xp, vista and 7) into xyplorer (latest beta on a real machine) isn't working. No error messages at all.

Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWar
The problem seems to be background processing: when it's disabled, it works. Custom Copy doesn't give an error message in the Jobs window, while the Windows Shell file functions backgrounded, do.
FWIW, Directory Opus 10.0 fails at this too with its own file functions.
VMware Workstation 7.1.4 / XYplorer 10.10.0107 / Windows 7 x64 SP1.

Thanks nas8e9,
I'll put a button on the toolbar that disables background processing as a temporary workaround

Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWar
I just tried it again...
VMware 8.0.0 471780, XYplorer v10.20.0011, Win 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
Direction: From guest (VM machine with windows explorer) to host (physical os with XYplorer)
Disabled background processing (through the new icon for the toolbar): doesn't work
Additionally disabled custom copy: doesn't work.

I wonder if this issue has anything to do with the issue I described in

Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWar
No error message?
Re: File copy to/from Remote Desktop Connection and/or VMWar
Environment:
VMware Workstation: v8.0.1build-528992
Physical: Windows 7, Ultimate, x64 SP1, German
Virtual: Windows XP Pro, x86 SP3, German
XYplorer: v10.80.0301 portable on both sides
Background processing and use custom copy are off (on both sides).
Copying is always invoked via Ctrl + c / Ctrl + v
---------------------------------------
- Copy from PHYSICAL to VIRTUAL, from XYplorer to XYplorer:
Any file copy operation leads to this error message on the VIRTUAL machine:

Works flawlessly with any file.
