Xyplorer Pro freezes on selecting open DOC if Preview Pane is showing

Post by hamful2 »

On Windows 7, with Preview Pane showing, clicking on a .DOC that's open in MS Word causes Xyplorer to go non-responsive for 2sec.

No such problem on e.g. .TXT.

What's going on here? Does this issue affect other file types too?

Is this with the unsupported free version referred to in another one of your posts?
If so, that's probably the reason as I can have any format showing in the preview pane and then double-click the file and it opens as expected using 23.50.0200 on Win10.
I don't think you should be posting bug reports for a five year old, no longer supported application that you're running on a thirteen year old OS for which support ended two years ago.

Even if what you're reporting was a bug in that old version, it's not going to be fixed since it's no longer supported.

No - hence the Subjects' "Xyplorer Pro" :)

Same here. But that's not the issue.

I'm not. I'm reporting for the current Xyplorer Pro.

> that you're running on a thirteen year old OS for which support ended two years ago.

I'm not. This is Windows 7, which Xyplorer supports.

It's waiting for the Office preview handler to return.

Ooo. Perhaps that wait should be off the UI thread?

Ideally yes. But usually it's that slow only the first time. All files after that preview fast.

I get this 2s freeze every time, here.

Just for avoidance of doubt, here, no preview appears first or any time. The files are open.

If the files are open no preview will be done.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3447)
Portable XYplorer (actual version, including betas)
Everything 1.5.0.1372a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.3, Listary Pro 6.3.0.73

OK, so I assume "All files after that preview fast" should read "All non-open files...".

Thanks.

Windows 10 - Oct 2023 beta - I'm getting this 2 second wait w/ docx previewer (Winword) which is very apparent if you click anything else in the UI, or a tab, or you switch back to a tab with a docx previously selected with preview pane open...you get the "Switch/retry" prompt that unnecessarily comes up.

In File Explorer in contrast, there is no UI freeze even if it's waiting for the previewer to load.

Is there any thought to splitting this wait time off again?

Keep getting, when preview pane is activated or even switching tabs from an active preview pane with docx:
XYplorer
An action cannot be completed because a component (xyz. docx - Microsoft Word) is not responding. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the component and correct the problem.
Switch To. Retry. Cancel

Make it 64-bit only (no fallback) to pack it into a background process:

Configuration | Other | Shell Integration | 64-bit Windows | Use 64-bit preview handlers for preview

Huge improvement! Thank you. Before that I was getting lags at the start of Word preview and at the end (ie going from Word to PDF for example, switching tabs, etc).
Maybe consider to make those two options as per above, default?
