List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
I usually work in Details view, but have one folder that benefits from List View, so I use FVS. However, for long(*) time I was wondering about a strange effect when entering the folder, now I know what's happening.
The screenshot gives an idea of what's happening (left pane has folder in its "normal" state, right pane shows folder after entering): That special folder has a not such a lot of folders, but LOTS of files - so getting folder sizes takes a lot of time...during which the folders are shown with too wide columns. When browsing over the "future place" of a folder name, that name is then drawn - as it happened with "ConfReg-09" and others.
But why is it getting folder sizes anyway in LV (they aren't shown)? Would be most welcome if this behaviour could be improved

Ok, empty folders are drawn in special colour, I see. But still...does it have to take that looong (4-5 secs)?

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
"Show Folder Sizes" is part of the list styles that you can define in a FVS. So turn it off and save your FVS.

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
Ah, thanks! But are we talking of the same? Config > General > "Tree and List" > "Always show filder sizes", right? Turned that off (with that folder active), saved FV settings, used the other pane to navigate to a folder in a different part of the tree and turned it on again, saved - and suddenly folder sizes were recalculated and the other pane (with saved FV settings) was redrawn.
(And also if I navigate (in that panel) to a subfolder and then back to the folder with the saved FV, it recalculates the sizes)
So either I picked the wrong setting - or it does not behave as you think it should.

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
I meant this: Tools | Customize List | Show Folder Sizes
If you tick Configuration | General | Tree and List | List | Always show folder sizes then it does not help though.

Ah, makes sense - except: this has been unticked all the time and still is!

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
Good, then it should work as I suggested.

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
Eh, don't understand. If it's already NOT set and I still see the delay "Calculating foldersizes" - how could I turn if off and get rid of the delay...?

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
1) untick Tools | Customize List | Show Folder Sizes
2) save your FVS
3) ensure that FVS includes List Style

1) was unticked
2) saved
3) yes, it is included.
And it seems now the time needed for "Calculating folder sizes" got longer - and suddenly columns get smaller (which is nice). (ah, but meanwhile I upgraded to 22.10.0014)

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
What if you turn off Color Filters?

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
With the global setting in Config? That doesn't seem to have an impact.

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
In the meantime I checked the code: it is impossible that folder size calculation is triggered if both "Always show folder sizes" and "Tools | Customize List | Show Folder Sizes" are disabled. (My Color Filters idea was rubbish.)
So, recheck your setup.

Re: List View slowed down by getting folder sizes
Ok, right. So I went to C:\ and checked "Tools | Customize List | Show Folder Sizes" and then disabled it in the FVS for C:\Git - now the columns are immediately shown with the right width (no more delays)!
Thanks for your patience!
