created .url files are invalid

Post by autocart »

Hi Don,

Just noticed:
.url files created by draggin the url from the browser into XY are invalid when trying to open by double click (with browser).
If I drag them into Windows Explorer then the created .url file works fine.

Regards, S.

Depends. Here they work fine.

- Which browser is that?
- Can you show the contents of such a file?

interesting. it seems to depend on the website. if i try this forum, it works fine.
here is an example that does not work:
https://communitytalks.getopensocial.co ... ial-manual
the not working .url file is in the attached zip.

BTW: The browser is FF.

Interesting indeed. I have two files, one created here, one from your zip. The contents are 100% identical, the names are 100% identical, the ownership is also shown as identical (I am the owner). None of the 300+ shell properties differ. Yet, when I double-click your file I see this:
2021-08-02_102436.png
2021-08-02_102436.png (10.26 KiB) Viewed 714 times
The shown filename is wrong: "Open Social Manual Community Talks_url" (there is no "_url"). The correct filename is "Open Social Manual Community Talks.url" of course.

Also when I make a copy of the file and rename it, I still get this prompt.

Totally weird.

Maybe Alternate Data Streams?

PS: Both files have a :Zone.Identifier:$DATA stream, but both streams are identical as well:

Code: Select all

[ZoneTransfer]
ZoneId=3

Don, thank you for looking into this.
Today, I tried it again, and now it works without problems.
Same browser, same folder location, I just updated XY over night but I can't imagine that that would be the issue.
Either way, problem disappeared. If it should reemerge, I might write again.
Thank you, S.

it becomes even more weired.
when I start it from a normal folder, I do get that same prompt.
but when I start it from a virtual folder / drive, created by cryptomator, then I do not get that prompt.
the .url file in the zip was also created by the url being pulled into that virtual folder.
