Paper Folder - Valid folders treated as invalid entries

Post by CoffeeKid »

Edit: Added screenshot to Add tab

My paper folder lists 6 folders that I have access to using the UNC path. The first three folders in the list are being treated as invalid.

Values in Paper Folders

Code: Select all

\\server
\\server\ApplicationStaging
\\server\TSDS
\\server\TSDS\DEV
\\server\TSDS\DEV\PEIMS
\\server\TSDS\DEV\PEIMS\REPORTS\TEMPLATES

In the screenshot below I have a tab for each folder open.

After I let XY removing invalid entries:

Code: Select all

\\server\TSDS\DEV
\\server\TSDS\DEV\PEIMS
\\server\TSDS\DEV\PEIMS\REPORTS\TEMPLATES
I do not have access to all folders on the server. Of the 17 folders, I only have access to 6 of them. Thought I would point that out in case this is a security issue and PF trying to access a folder/file I am not authorized for.

Note that servers and shares cannot be part of a paper folder. So these cannot work:

Code: Select all

\\server
\\server\ApplicationStaging
\\server\TSDS

Well, that's a bummer. Those are legitimate folders with valid security. Would have been nice to replace my mapped drives with paper folders.

Not sure what you are missing. Opening those drives from a Paper Folder?

My job consists of supporting many databases, web services, and deployments. As part of that web services and deployments, I need to jump around to a ridiculous number of servers, folders, and files. Right now I have mapped drives to some key locations but then I use OneNote for all of the other locations because there's a limit.

I was looking at Paper Folders as a way to bring all of these locations into a single place and remove my need for mapped drives and OneNote UNC lists. XY would be a better place to hold this info as I'm can work with files as needed rather than jumping back and forth. My workflow would have been to lock the paper folder tab so that I can always go back to it quickly.

I see servers and shares can be added as a catalog. Maybe that is a better way to keep all of this together, create a new category.

So like I said: You want to open those drives from a Paper Folder.
I made a note. It might be possible to lift this restriction.

Yep, that would work.

Sorry about the delay. This is amazing and is working perfectly.

My only issue is that I really need to turn off "Always show folder sizes". Too easy to add a server with too many files. Guess this is the price you have to pay when your given everything at your fingertips.

Sure? I thought of that and excluded drives and servers in paper folders from folder size calculation.

I'll kick it off again and let it finish to see the final output. It very well could have been all of the other folders needing to be recalculated. I just gave up after 20min.

I don't know how long it took since I switched over and worked on some development.

I believe the issue was because the ApplicationStaging share was never cached so it got all 222k details. Now that it's cached navigation is super fast.

OK, those folders are shares, right? Would you agree that they should not be calculated (just like drives are not calculated)?

Now that I know what is going on I'm fine with drives not caching but shares are OK. The reason is what is share but a shortcut to a folder.

Would have been nice to have the cached folders count and size display immediately while the folders that need to be calculated having an indicator that processing needs to be done or is being done.
