Random Freezing 20.90.0900

Post by CFTwFSgJaLsDUrLv »

The whole app just stops responding for no apparent reason. I can switch to other apps, and switch back, but XYplorer does nothing. That can last 30 seconds. Task Manager doesn't show it doing anything much, but conversely does not say that it is not responding.

When I switch between tabs it will freeze for a good few seconds before showing the contents of that tab.

I am new to XYplorer, so there may be settings that I have not set, but this is making it a real pain to use. Any help would be welcomed.

And the tabs you are switching to, point to where?
Which view mode?
Are additional columns used in that mode?
How many files are inside such a folder?
...

Thanks for your interest.
I just found a thread about slow operation which has suggested excluding XYPlorer and XYcopy from Windows Defender checking, so have tried that first. If it doesn't solve the problem I will post back.

Even within a tab, there are problems.

All tabs are on internal E drive
Details mode.
Columns - Name, Ext, Size, Type, Modified, Created, Camera Model
I'm not sure what are standard/additional.
(all these files are pdf)

See screenshot. I want to rename a file. Normally I'd click on the name, then click again and an edit box would open so I can amend it. That is not happening. So I right click, and after a couple of seconds the menu pops out. I choose "rename" and it gives me a pop up warning that "Tree or list must have input focus". The tab is highlighted in blue, showing it has focus. The file I selected is highlighted in a grey - which changes to highlight any other file I click on. That seems to imply that XYP can't select any file in that folder - yet it had been doing so.

I then selected the tab immediately to the left, and single clicking highlighted a file in pale blue, as expected. Then clicking again opened the name for editing, though I just pressed escape to cancel. Going back to the previously problematic tab allowed me to select and edit as expected.

I've opened, viewed and renamed about a dozen. Then (Back to the original reason for my post) clicking the tab to the left again, it took 17 seconds before displaying the details at the bottom where it shows number of files (512) and a total of 45 seconds before it showed the list of files - at which point it revised the number of files to 1818. This folder contains images - all jpg apart from 14 x mp4.

Returning to the original tab showed the file list in about a second. Selecting the Camera 2017 tab this time took 12 seconds to show the bottom bar, and 44 seconds to show the file list. Repeating again, 20 seconds and 46 seconds. Then 7 and 36.

Regarding the "Camera model" column.

Does it display a property, a special property or a custom column? (normally it's a property).

Remove it. Does that fix the problem?

It is a field that shows in the field selection drop down as "Custom 3: Camera Model".

Yes, that speeds it up immensely. It switches quickly between tabs. Thank you.

When I added that field back while in the Camera 2017 tab, it took 40 seconds to show that column. Not showing that column speeds it up again. I don't recall any warning in the notes and how-tos that showing other than the default columns would slow it down. From disk usage it seems that XYplorer reads that from each file each time it looks in that directory, even if it has just done so moments before.

Watching Task Manager while doing the switching before my earlier post, XYplorer hardly even reached 3% of CPU. I had thought it would have been working hard.

BUT here is a strange thing - Just now, I tried again changing tabs while showing the camera model, it reached 10% CPU and finished switching tabs in about 8 seconds, which I would have been OK with. I've not closed any programs or apps in between times.

Right click that column header, choose "Configure Custom Column 3"
and change the trigger from "Browse" to "List".

This would solve the performance problem but you can only sort by this column after scrolling over all entries...

Thanks. That works well.

The same thing could be done like here: viewtopic.php?p=179873#p179873

Ofc with a different ID (for "Camera model") and a different ex1, 2, ... column
