Audio Preview - Strange behaviour

Post by cs759 »

Hi,

I've been trying to get the Audio preview thing working, and it does generally apart from this problem.
When previewing the first file it plays, but when I switch to the next file the volume suddenly lowers, then the next file and the volume lowers even more and so on until it got down to zero and now I can't get it to come on again at all.

This is just in xyplorer, all volumes are fine in other programs.
Version 20.50

I've obviously tried restarting xyplorer, tried rebooting, nothing brings it back, so I tried a clean install (just downloaded the current beta 20.50.0.113), turned on the settings so it would do audio preview, now I have sound, but it's still doing the volume lowering thing.
After raising the volume manually, it will sometimes keep that level, but if I restart xyplorer, it does it all over again.

I did a short video of it so you can see (you can't hear sound on the video because I only use headphones but you can see the levels changing).

Edit: can't attach video, even 5MB too large

P.S. xyplorer is a wonderful program, I couldn't live without. Many times I think I wish it could do this or that, so I hunt around and it can already do it, I just have to turn on the setting.

Strange indeed! Definitely does not happen here. Does it happen with all sound files, or only MP3?

I've tried 3 file types, mp3 wav and flac. It happens on mp3 and wav, but flacs fail to play at all (don't know why but thats a different problem).

I've just tried it on a different laptop, same happens. It maybe that I have some unusual combination of audio preview settings in xyplorer, as it only started happening on the other laptop when I added the audio preview settings I've been using.

[*]For you to see it happening (hopefully, unless there's something abnormal to me on both my laptops), I've saved to zip, the xyplorer folder+xyplorer.ini, and also the sound files I was testing with so you can try it.

[*]I have xyplorer setup so I hover over the icon and the preview plays.

[*]To download the test files mentioned above
[REMOVED]

There is a windows sound setting that reduces volume by 80% on phone calls (who ever uses that)
search > change system sounds > communication tab
I've have set that to 'do nothing' but it doesn't solve the problem.

BTW I have Windows 10 pro x64 latest updates

Thanks for the perfect test package (apart from the license key, could have done without that ;)), tried the files on latest Win8.1 and latest Win10: Nothing. All fine here. :|

Very nice! (How many apps support a zero-click audio preview?)

 Sorry about that, didn't occur to me. I should have emailed to you instead.

Thanks for trying anyway. I've done some further research and many others are having the dreaded automatic volume turn down problem. It seems it's to do with Realtek/Dolby Skype Narrator etc and soundcard settings. I've tried practically everything and it still does it. I guess you're on a desktop and don't have all this other audio interference.

Actually my music sequencers do FL Studio and Reaper but they're navigation is a pain, and as you say I doubt any File managers do, and if they did they'd still be missing all the other features.

I've found out a sort of work around.

It doesn't happen if the preview pane is open.
It doesn't happen if the preview pane is closed, as long as the preview pane was open before.
It doesn't happen if you just open and close the preview pane once after starting xyplorer.

I suppose the simplest thing is just to leave the preview pane open with it dragged over to use as little amount of space as possible.

It's strange that no other programs do it, like mpc-hc or audacity, which is what made me originally think it was an xyplorer problem.

Really weird. Nobody ever reported this apart from you.

"It doesn't happen if the preview pane is open." ... just open, or also used for the preview?

UPDATE: Anyway, I revised some parts of the code. It might be fixed in the next beta.

Yes, can't make it happen at all. Tried many times.
admin wrote: 07 Nov 2019 11:02 ... just open
Not sure sure what you mean by that.

I should say, that in order to try and make this problem go away, I went into windows 'add/remove windows features' and removed windows media player (I don't like it, don't use it anyway), but it didn't change anything apart from the windows media player gui disappeared from the xyplorer preview pane, but sound still happens all the same, and the behaviour seems exactly the same.

Quite simply, all I have to do to stop it happening is:-

either - do CTRL+F11 twice after starting XYplorer to open and close the preview window. Doesn't happen at all in that case.

or - do CTRL+F11 once after starting XYplorer to open the preview window and leave it open. Doesn't happen at all in that case either.

if - I start XYplorer with preview window closed and never open it, the problem always happens without fail. Tried it many times. Although in this case, if you repeatedly keep dragging the windows mixer volume slider up to max, it does seem to stay there after a while, but this is inconsistent.

Looking at the code I fail to see any connection between preview pane and this issue. Really weird.

Anyway, let's see whether the next beta fixes it...

Hi
sorry to report I have a similar problem. On hover over the icon the sound is all ways very low.
Plays ok in the preview panel.
Changed the music player from Bee to VLC and Windows media and still the same.

Regards Brian
Using 20.50.0200 and Windows 10 64 bit

No, not even close in my case. It's just a windows media player gui.

Here are some screen shots.

1 just windows volume mixer open
2 now open xyplorer (no preview window)
3 now autoplay preview an mp3 (no preview window) volume lowers
4 now with preview window open (it wouldnt autoplay, i had to press the button), volume doesnt lower
5 now after closing the preview window, volume doesnt lower (I hadn't raised it again from the last time it lowered)

BTW, I was today also very surprised to see the MS MediaPlayer GUI in the preview tab for audio files. I thought that it is perhaps some new feature that I missed to read about. I would very much prefer the old XY GUI there. (Experienced under Win7.)

What you are showing is the Preview Panel (Ctrl+F11), whereas I'm talking about the Preview Tab (F12). Nothing was changed here for a long time.

I am talking about the preview tab. It is not the initial problem of this thread, but where is the old GUI?
