XYplorer got tagged as malware by Malwarebytes

Post by SoCalSienna »

Hi, Today when I clicked the XYplorer icon on my Win10 taskbar, I got an error message ("path does not exist"), so I tried to re-install XYplorer. I expected the re-install to go fine.

But the install file, xyplorer_full.zip gets identified as "Trojan.MalPack.VB.Generic" by Malwarebytes. Thoughts?

This happens from time to time. It's always a false positive and it will silently disappear after some hours.

Ok, that's good. Thank you for the very quick responses. Can you comment on why it seemed like two separate events? (the program would not open from the desktop task bar shortcut, then the new install zip file from xyplorer.com got tagged as malware).

That one is for Malwarebytes to explain.

Hello, So I just created a account here to talk about the malwarebytes detection.

So Yes Now we have to add a exclusion for the xyplorer.exe to keep it running

Just an additional confirmation:

This morning Malwarebytes flagged xyplorer.exe as containing "Trojan.MalPack.VB.Generic", and quarantined.

Removed from Quarantine, scanned with AVG and Adaware - no issues reported from either.

Downloaded XYPlorer 20.20 - download was flagged/quarantined.

Removed download from Quarantine, scanned - AVG and Adaware report nothing.

Installed/updated to 20.20 ... Malwarebytes immediately flagged/quarantined.

Removed 20.20 from quarantine, scanned - AVG and Adaware report nothing; Malwarebytes re-quarantined.

Per admin I'll "wait a few hours", see how it resolves.

It is still happening with Malwarebytes, even after forcing a Malwarebytes update. My "temporary" solution has been to add XYplorer.exe in the directory where it is installed as an "exclusion". So far, no response from the Malwarebytes folks about their false positive.

Terrible thing to experience this morning.
I have 5 computers and the two I turned on this morning both were affected by Malwarebytes.
I have disabled Malwarebytes on these computers.Heck, it hardly ever finds anything on my computers. That's good- not bad.
The others I will not turn on until they fix the problem.

The Malwarebytes forum shows no reference to the problem. I'll wait a while and post this- or better yet go right the the folks in charge there.

Well, paranoia is their business model. And on top they seem to make it hard to report false positives. I would unuse them...

I'm not so sure about that, Don. They're good at what they do, just sometimes false positives like in this instance.

For those of us who trust you, it's relatively easy to make an exception for XY and then not lose the valuable functionality of Malwarebytes as a whole.

Just my 2¢

Well, for me AV is the enemy. I'm losing money and reputation for each false positive... :blackstorm:
