Neither of the two methods I use to create a shortcut on the desktop work from XYplorer:
1. Right drag from the window to the desktop and select "create shortcut here" - that menu item does not exist when draging from XYplorer.
2. Using the clipboard: "copy" the file in XYplorer either using Ctrl-C or right clicking. Then right click on the desktop and select "Paste Shortcut" - that menu item does exist but is greyed out.

Yep (same in XP, by the way).
1. Never was able to solve this. Big mystery.
2. Good point. Currently not able to solve this. But will try again.
PS: I have an item in my SendTo submenu that will create a shortcut to the selected item on the Desktop! Don't you?

Nir Sofer's NirExt (nirsoft.net) gives you three special context menu extensions, that work great out of XY too. One is Create Shortcut+. Lets you choose from
Desktop
Start Menu
Start Menu->Programs
Desktop (For All Users)
Start Menu (For All Users)
Start Menu->Programs (For All Users)
+ all options you're used to from shortcut properties!
There is a Advanced run and a Folder properties extension in the very small package freeware
